Job Description:

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician is a day position at the Allyn's Point polystyrene plant typically working five 8-hour days per week. The job will require overtime work and extended hours on some weekends, nights and holidays depending on plant needs. This job requires some travel for off-site training and Turnaround support. It is necessary for maintenance technicians to be on-call on a rotation basis. Knowledge and use of a PC workstation, use of a computerized maintenance work order system (SAP), the ability to safely and responsibly troubleshoot and repair equipment in an operating chemical plant is required. Specialized maintenance and mechanical skills are needed as outlined below. Primary Responsibilities

    • Troubleshoot and repair rotating and reciprocating equipment.
    • General mechanical repair including machining and fabrication.
    • Analyze and problem solve malfunctioning equipment (ex. differentiating between an equipment problem and a process problem).
    • Advocate for safe work and adhere to all safe work standards, procedures and housekeeping practices.
    • Be familiar with mobile crane operation and be certified as a rigger.
    • Operate aerial lifts and forklifts as necessary to complete work.
    • Support minor mechanical design for capital projects and turnarounds.
    • Provide work direction to contractor crews.
    • Work closely with other departments and peers, as necessary, to ensure they are provided with quality maintenance services.
    • Identify ways to reduce cost of repairing equipment while maintaining or increasing the quality of repairs and increasing the reliability of the equipment.
    • Perform all duties with a high degree of dedication to safety and environmental stewardship.
    • Ensure procedures are valid and up-to date.
    • Perform equipment and pipe inspections.
    • Other duties as identified and deemed necessary.
Job Requirements
    • High school diploma is required.
    • Mechanical maintenance experience such as millwright, machinist and industrial mechanic in a chemical, refining, or other manufacturing plant. This plant experience should include troubleshooting and repair of pumps, compressors, gear boxes, fans and blowers. Experience of 3-5 years or more is desired.
    • Working knowledge of rim and face, reverse indicator alignment, laser alignment techniques, and detecting/correcting soft foot.
    • Working knowledge of mechanical seals, flush pans and seal failure analysis.
    • Working knowledge of mechanical refrigeration units.
    • Has pipefitting skills both welded and threaded.
    • Knowledge of basic machining including lathes, mills and presses.
    • Ability to read equipment prints, secure information from OEM manuals, and proficiency with measurement tools (micrometers, dial calipers etc.).
    • Possess basic computer skills to interface with maintenance management system (SAP) and basic Microsoft office knowledge.
    • Be able and willing to take call-ins and work overtime hours.
    • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
    • Work involves climbing stairs and ladders.
    • Must be able to work at heights.
    • Must be able to wear a respirator.
    • Basic competency in reading and math.

Other Information
    • This position is part of the Allyn's Point manufacturing organization and is located at the Allyn's Point polystyrene plant in Gales Ferry, Connecticut.
    • Starting salary range is $60,000 - $70,000 annually. Grade and salary level offered to the successful candidate will be appropriate to the job duties and commensurate with the candidate's experience.

    • The work schedule for this position is a 5-day, 40 hours per week position. The successful candidate will be expected to work some overtime.
