Primary Purpose of the Position:

The Maintenance/Construction Technician I at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum works closely with the Maintenance/Construction Technician II to maintain site landscape and structures by performing sub-journey level maintenance work in HVAC, carpentry, masonry, painting, small engine maintenance, electrical, plumbing, and housekeeping. We are seeking a highly motivated Maintenance Technician to join our dedicated team. In this role, you will have many opportunities to train and learn from other skilled craftsmen to be able to expand your current skill set. You will play a crucial part in maintaining and enhancing our facilities and equipment, ensuring a safe and efficient work environment for all employees and visitors.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and grounds at the site.

* Perform sub-journey level maintenance work in HVAC, carpentry, masonry, painting, small engine repair and maintenance, electrical, and/or plumbing.

* Janitorial and housekeeping.

Position/Physical Requirements:

* Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

* Must be able to perform strenuous activities.

* Must be able to walk long distances on uneven ground.

* Must be able to work in various weather conditions.

* Must be able to climb ladders and be willing to work on lifts and roofs.

* This position may require occasional night or weekend work.

* Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

* Must have a valid Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

* Demonstrated experience in landscaping and mowing.

* Demonstrated experience in painting and/or minor building repair or maintenance.

* Demonstrated experience with equipment operation and maintenance.

* Demonstrated experience with janitorial upkeep.

Management Preferences:

* Knowledge of historical building preservation and/or repair.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades

or

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Founded in 1902 by Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, Palmer Memorial Institute transformed the lives of more than 2,000 African American students. Today, visitors can explore this unique environment where students lived and learned during the greater part of the 20th century.

Division Description:

The Division of State Historic Sites and Properties connects people to North Carolina's history, sharing the power of place to inspire a common future through preservation, education, and transformative engagement.
