Salary : $38,804.68 Annually Location : Police Department 702 South Seminary Street Florence Job Type: Full Time Job Number: 09242024 Department: Police Opening Date: 09/24/2024 Closing Date: 10/1/2024 4:59 PM Central Job Summary This position involves responsibility for the maintenance and efficient operation of the police department and all properties under the police department including performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to departmental buildings, facilities, vehicles, and operational systems. Purchases necessary equipment and supplies needed to carry out maintenance and repairs. Assists in estimating costs of new projects and repairs for budgetary purposes. Performs related work in other areas of the department including security details, special events, positioning of safety fencing and barricades, and deployment of the Mobile Incident Command vehicle. The position is on a 24-hour emergency call. Essential Duties and Responsibilities and Supervision Required
  • Maintenance Duties
    • Performs routine inspections of buildings, facilities, and operational systems and maintains records of such inspections.
    • Performs routine maintenance to operational systems such as changing HVAC filters, light bulbs, lubrication, etc.
    • Investigate, diagnose, and troubleshoot all failures and malfunctions before calling an outside repairman.
    • Performs repairs related to carpentry, roofing, masonry, plumbing, electrical, appliances, sheetrock, and HVAC systems.
    • Purchase and maintain an inventory of needed supplies and materials.
    • Assists the Sergeant and/or Lieutenant of the Services Division in estimating costs of new projects or repairs for budgetary purposes.
    • Leads or assists departmental personnel on construction and maintenance projects.
    • Performs remodeling tasks and/or minor construction tasks related to facility needs.
    • Performs basic cleaning and sanitation as needed.
    • Performs ground maintenance and cleaning as required.
    • Performs or assists with minor vehicle repairs and maintenance
    • Assists in transporting vehicles for repairs.
    • Responsible for the deployment of portable fencing, traffic cones, and street closure barricades.
    • Responsible for deployment of the Mobile Incident Command vehicle.
    • Transport and set up equipment for City-sponsored events.
    • Escorts non-departmental workers onsite for repairs or maintenance.
    • Monitors all areas of the department for items that could pose a security risk.
    • Responsible for performing other duties related to the upkeep of the building, facilities, and fleet.
    • Responsible for routine cleaning and custodial duties in police headquarters including vacuuming, mopping, and waxing floors, emptying garbage, and cleaning bathroom and kitchen facilities.
  • Vehicles
    • Assists with minor vehicle repairs and maintenance including changing wiper blades, and replacing light bulbs and fuses.
    • Assists in transporting vehicles for repairs.
    • Set up and operate the mobile command post and camper.
    • Inspect, start, and maintain Homeland Security equipment; Diesel trucks, enclosed 5th wheel trailers, and emergency generator on a weekly basis.
    • Maintains proper maintenance of assigned vehicles used by the parking enforcement officers.
    • Responsible for performing other duties related to the upkeep of the building and fleet.
  • Assists Officers
    • Provides non-law enforcement-related support for Police Officers when needed.
    • Assists with proper destruction of outdated evidence and other property according to direction by the evidence custodian.
    • Transport and set up equipment for City-sponsored special events.
    • Assist in directing traffic and setup of barricades when needed for City-sponsored special events.
  • Security Duties
    • Keeps all areas free of items that could cause a security risk for police headquarters or a danger to the well-being of police employees.
  • Minimum Qualifications, Experience, Training, & License
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the general construction field is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in general maintenance is preferred.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Nineteen (19) years of age or older.
  • Valid Alabama driver's license.
  • CDL is recommended, but not required.
  • Required Knowledge Skills Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public in very trying and stressful situations, using tact.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with other personnel, both orally and in writing.
  • Management and delegation skills.
  • Excellent penmanship.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to assess all types of damages to facilities, and make decisions to correct them.
  • Ability to concentrate and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Must possess extremely good judgment and the ability to handle delicate situations with discretion.
  • Ability to work with outside contractors and repairmen to effect repairs.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, blueprints, and other construction documents.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of forming and pouring concrete.
  • General knowledge of locks and installation of locks.
  • Supervision: Limited direct supervision; work is reviewed only from an overall standpoint. Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
  • Transporting heavy materials.
  • Must be able to work in closed or closed in areas.
  • Must be able to climb and work on ladders.
  • Above average stress level, due to the possibility of being subjected to verbal abuse from citizens.
  • Bending, pushing, pulling, prolonged standing, walking, climbing, and stretching.
  • Ability to work with continuous interruptions from visitors, telephones, and departmental personnel.
  • Flexibility in terms of work schedules, as he/she may be required to work various hours/shifts.
  • Prolonged exposure to outdoor elements including extreme heat and cold.
  • Equipment/Tools Used: Telephone, power and hand tools, trucks, tractor, loader/backhoe, push mower, weedeater, chainsaw, spreader, blowers, pressure washers, lawn tractors, tire changer, welder, torch, sprinkler, wheelbarrow, and forklift.
