Read below to learn more about the position and to submit your application.This is a semi-skilled or skilled maintenance position performing a variety of maintenance, repair, finishing, grounds maintenance, and vehicle operation activities on a shift or project. Work involves performing and leading a variety of city street and road maintenance and repair work and grounds maintenance and repair work including the operation of loaders,backhoes, mowers, jet vac sewer flushers, power tools, snow blowers, jack hammers, front end loaders, sprayers, and other equipment. Position may perform some lead work over crewmembers. Please note, that this position is under the United Steelworkers (USW) Union, as such, a successful candidate would start at Step 1 and earn $23.48/hr.REGULAR HOURS OF WORK:The regular hours of work are Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. This position is open until filled. Applications are being reviewed as they are received. SUPERVISION Work is performed under the general direction of a maintenance management staff. Employee must also be able to schedule workers for specific jobs, prioritize maintenance work, and handle equipment breakdowns. Work is reviewed through observation for results obtained and performance evaluations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK(May not include all duties performed.)
  • Trains, assist, guides, and leads a crew of part time or seasonal maintenance workers, on a shift or maintenance project;tracks and retains maintenance records, worksheets; prepares monthly and daily reports; trains crews on proper use and maintenance of equipment; maintains all equipment; orders equipment parts, as needed.
  • Performs rough carpentry work, assists in installing paneling, dry wall, cabinets, flooring, framing, and shelves in city buildings and facilities.
  • Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms and shelters; cleans and dusts furniture and bookcases; uses floor buffer to polish floors;makes minor repairs to walls, windows, doors, floors; straightens up work areas; moves furniture, materials and supplies;cleans equipment; cleans and unplugs drains; assists in making plumbing and electrical repairs.
  • Prepares and paints walls, floors, ceilings; builds shelves, bulletin boards, display cases, signage and the like; repairs desks,tables, chairs and other furniture.
  • Performs road repair work in patching cracks, potholes, and other deterioration in streets; applies cold mix patch asphalt to potholes; levels asphalt; spreads gravel or other construction materials; repairs curbs, sidewalks, and guardrails; excavates deteriorated concrete and asphalt; shovels and salts sidewalks; chips brush; performs a wide variety of similar tasks in maintenance activities.
  • Performs a variety of landscaping maintenance work; maintains parks and city grounds by mowing grass, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, edging, seeding, removing trash, painting, chemical application, performing light construction,and providing other grounds maintenance assistance; digs graves, shovels snow, salts streets; removes debris from roadways and city grounds.
  • Performs varied manual and equipment, operation duties in flushing and otherwise cleaning sewers and in repairing manholes and lines; builds, cleans and unclogs catch basins; lays sewer and water lines; rebuilds storm sewers inlets and sanitary sewer manholes; repairs water main line and service breaks; locates and marks utilities (O.U.P.S.).
  • Maintains water distribution system; installs water service taps, meters, and valves, fire hydrants; flushes and services fire hydrants.
  • Operates dump, pickup, and flatbed trucks, backhoes, front end loaders, or similar equipment and vehicles; loads and unloads topsoil and gravel from flatbed trucks; sets out barricades; directs traffic; replaces and paints damaged road signs;operates a variety of standard power tools and equipment in grounds and maintenance repair activities on a regular basis;operates snow plows, weedeaters, sprayers, mowers, trucks, and blowers, as needed; removes ice, leaves, and snow from roadways, driveways, and walkways.
  • Builds forms, pours and finishes concrete; repairs concrete structures.
  • Operates such machines as jack hammers, jet vac sewer flusher, asphalt rollers and plate compactors, chippers, stump grinders, chain saws, air compressors, lawn mowers, power tools and similar public works equipment; operates leaf machine and drives the leaf truck.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to appliances, plumbing and electrical fixtures, irrigation, and other equipment; assists in the maintenance and repair and/or replacement of doors, windows, ceilings, floors, walls,plumbing, heating, ventilation, and electrical fixtures and systems and the like; paints machinery, building, and walls.
  • Performs specialized tasks such as preparing surfaces of playing fields, making and setting signs, assists in setting markers and other landscape maintenance.
  • Responds to emergency call-ins as needed.
  • Provides and fulfills stand-by staffing needs responding to after hours call outs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORKPossession of high school diploma, or equivalent, and three years experience in construction and maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skill:
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the safe and correct use of hand and power tools and equipment common to the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use and apply basic written and mathematic skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to drive motor vehicles and operate commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to load and unload trucks with front end loader.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift shoves, bricks, wood, and other equipment and transport dirt, gravel, and other materials from one location to another.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and equipment.
  • Ability to dig, bend, and lift for patching pavement and other repairs.
  • Maintain a valid Ohio commercial driver's license.
