The Public Works and Parks, Recreations & Community Services Departments are actively seeking four (4) Maintenance Worker I's.

This is service maintenance work in performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of public works projects, public parks grounds, athletic fields, and associated right-of-way/public property maintenance duties. Work requires knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures for public works construction projects, landscape maintenance and ability to operate simple machinery and equipment, which can be learned on the job within several months. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. Work is performed following specific instructions and established routines. The work is repetitive with little need to exercise judgment; situations are nearly the same and require choice of the correct procedure. Work is performed outdoors where there are some risks and hazards associated with operating machinery and vehicles on or near the roadway. Operates motor vehicles, machinery, and tools. Physical demands consist of working in adverse weather conditions, heavy physical exertion, and lifting and moving objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more. Work is performed under immediate supervision where work assignments are well-detailed and well-prescribed by a superior or covered by established procedures and the worker is not permitted to deviate from established procedures.

Examples of Work

* Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of public works projects, public parks grounds, athletic fields, and associated right-of-way/public property maintenance duties.

* Loads and unloads materials from trucks.

* Operates machinery and tools such as shovels, picks, sling blades, sledgehammers, axes, trowels, chain saws, concrete saws, asphalt rollers, mowers, blowers, edgers, weed eaters, sprayers, pumps, patching machines, tamping devices, and other simple machines and equipment.

* Sets up safety equipment and barriers around job sites.

* Cleans and stores tools and equipment.

* Operates motor vehicles to transport materials, supplies and tools.

* Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Core Competencies.

* Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures used in the construction, maintenance, upkeep and repair of public works projects, public parks grounds, athletic fields and associated right-of-way/public property and related equipment.

* Knowledge of tools used in landscaping, maintenance, and construction work.

* Knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations.

* Ability to operate machinery and tools such as shovels, picks, sling blades, sledgehammers, axes, trowels, chain saws, concrete saws, asphalt rollers, mowers, blowers, edgers, weed eaters, sprayers, pumps, patching machines, tamping devices, and other simple machines and equipment.

* Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.

* Ability to lift and move supplies and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.

* Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning labels and symbols identifying hazardous materials.

* Ability to operate motor vehicles.

* Ability to perform manual labor.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

* Must be able to perform manual labor and to read and write English.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

* A valid driver's license Is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.

* Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

* The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.

* This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
