If so, we the City of Burlington is hiring a Maintenance Worker II.About us:The East Burlington WWTP was put into service in 1959 and upgraded in 1993. It has the capacity to treat 12 million gallons per day (MGD) of domestic and industrial sewage. The treatment facility uses a biological process to separate organic matter from the water. Water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine and dechlorinated before being discharged into the Haw River. Organic matter (biosolids) removed by the process is treated and used as a soil conditioner on area farmland. What you will be doing: An employee in this class performs semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance of water and wastewater facilities and grounds. The employee is responsible for maintaining the appearance of the building and its' surrounding, keeping the facilities sanitary and safe. Hiring Range: $37,319.62 - $41,051.58. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and certifications. Examples of Duties Checks operation of water and wastewater valves by manually turning valves on and off with valve key or wrench; reports valve replacement needs to supervisor.Paints equipment and buildingsDigs, patches, and backfills pavement or grounds, using shovels, dump trucks, jackhammers, and tamps.Assists with repair of water and wastewater main breaks; digs pavement and backfills.Handles deliveries and stocks suppliesPerforms general landscaping work including mowing with riding and push mowers, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, and cutting down trees.Shovels snow from sidewalks and spreads ice melting materialsCleans and washes bar screens, scum boxes, weirs, and sand filter screens, treating sludge, flushing and checking underground pumps, and recording readings and measurements at water and wastewater plants.Empties trash and recycle containers.Mops and cleans the floors, offices, hallways and restrooms.Sets up wet floor signs to help prevent slips and falls.Assists lab assistants gathering distribution of water samples.Performs related duties as required. Qualifications Knowledge and AbilitiesGeneral knowledge of general maintenance work performed in a water or wastewater treatment plantSkill in operating a mower, tractor, dump truck, leaf blower, forklift, chainsaw, weed eater, tamp, jackhammer, and other maintenance equipmentSkill in seeding and use of straw, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking, and erecting proper signage to denote crews at work.Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED equivalency AND6 months of work experience in general maintenance work ORAn equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred:Work experience in a water treatment plant. Valid Driver's License.
