Scan Me:CLASS DEFINITIONPerforms a variety of manual, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of a variety of Public Works streets, sidewalks and traffic signs, and performs other duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis journey-level classification is distinguished by the skilled maintenance tasks performed under general supervision.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDThe incumbent works under the general supervision of a Foreman and the Internal Services Supervisor or Public Services Supervisor. Job OverviewESSENTIAL DUTIESWhen assigned to Landscape:
  • Dig trenches, holes, etc., to facilitate installation and repair of irrigation systems or other utilities.
  • Clean, rake and grade planters, ball fields, playgrounds, or other landscaped areas.
  • Plant turf, shrubs, trees, and ground cover.
  • Assist and work with service contractors in the repair and maintenance of City landscaped areas.
  • With oversight, applies sprays of various herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals.
  • With oversight, responds to bee trouble calls and treats and/or removes as appropriate.
  • With oversight, maintains rodent and pest traps and bait stations in landscaped areas.
When assigned to Facilities:
  • Perform and assist in preventive and corrective building maintenance tasks, which may involve carpentry, painting, plumbing, metal fabrication, welding, heating, air conditioning and electrical work.
  • Perform preventive and corrective equipment maintenance tasks, involving playground units, tables, chairs, gates, security and safety equipment, and system fences.
  • Assist in troubleshooting various electrical problems involving electrical circuits, switches and controls. Repair and replace electrical fixtures, switches and related equipment, using a variety of materials, tools, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in the operation, troubleshooting and minor repair of air conditioning and heating units and components.
  • Monitor contractors for task completion.
  • Perform rough framing and finish work in remodeling offices and other structures.
  • Install and repair doors, floors, partitions, locks, roofs and ceilings.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting, and apply paint to a variety of building and fixture surfaces.
  • Mix, pour and form concrete.
  • Repair and maintain playground equipment, drinking fountains, facilities and other City structures and equipment for safety purposes and compliance with regulations and codes.
  • Fabricate equipment as needed.
  • Receive, input and query data related to the performance of job related tasks utilizing a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Prepare work orders, inspection forms and other documents as needed.
  • Replace lamps in light fixtures, and clean fixtures utilizing a ladder or man lift.
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES
  • Operate a variety of vehicles with or without trailers and motorized equipment.
  • Load, lift, and carry various materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Operate a variety of power, pneumatic, and miscellaneous hand tools in the performance of Public Works maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform and assist in the installation of proper lane closure and traffic control.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and daily reports as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINEEDUCATION:When assigned to Landscape:
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • College coursework with an emphasis in maintenance, and/or construction maintenance is highly desirable.
When assigned to Facilities:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Vocational/technical coursework in facilities/building maintenance/repair is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE:When assigned to Landscape:
  • Previous maintenance experience in the repair, rehabilitation and construction including streets, sidewalk, curb and gutter, and traffic signs, preferably in a municipal setting.
When assigned to Facilities:
  • Two years related experience in facilities maintenance that may include carpentry, painting, plumbing, metal fabrication, welding, heating, air conditioning and electrical work, preferably in a municipal setting or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:When assigned to Landscape:
  • Principles of asphalt concrete street construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Principles of Portland cement concrete construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Methods, procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, traffic signs and delineation.
  • Proper use and maintenance of small hand tools and power equipment.
  • Customer service principles and techniques.
  • Use a variety of motorized and non-motorized equipment such as light and heavy trucks, trailers, tractors, skip loaders, and pneumatic tools.
  • Set up traffic lane closures for vehicle traffic control.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, contractors, and the public.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle.
When assigned to Facilities:
  • Must possess a strong customer service orientation and be a team player.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, fellow employees, public officials and the public.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with Department personnel, contractors and the public.
  • Understand and explain, demonstrate and clarify to others well-established policies, procedures and standards.

  • Utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as regulations, blueprints, electrical diagrams, time sheets and general operating manuals.

  • Exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.
  • Utilize a computer/tablet and related software to input, query and maintain data.
  • Knowledge of the function, purpose and safe operation of hand tools, power tools and shop machinery.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and methods of troubleshooting for construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing systems, electrical systems and mechanical systems
REQUISITE ABILITIES:When assigned to Landscape:
  • Respond to emergency conditions in all department functions.
  • Work with a variety of personnel including full-time, part-time, and contract personnel.
  • Implement and oversee preventative maintenance program for equipment.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Read and understand work orders, drawings, maps, etc.
  • Lift and carry heavy objects safely.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License is required.
  • A Class A or B Commercial Driver's License for manual transmissions with tanker and air brake endorsements is highly desirable.
  • Maintain, at all times, the license required for this job description.
  • When assigned to Facilities: Building Operator certification is highly desirable
PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:Work will primarily be outdoors with full exposure to the elements but may work indoors as well. Performs strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time requiring physical strength and endurance; drive a City vehicle on City business; operate motorized equipment and machinery; may work under damp conditions and in confined spaces and, therefore, may work on slippery and uneven surfaces; crouch, sit, stand, walk, bend, crawl, kneel, pull, reach, push, twist, climb ladders and sloping surfaces, grasp, drag, lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds; work above shoulder level with power and/or hand tools for sustained periods of time; may be exposed to dust, pollen, grass, dirt, chemicals, solvents, paint, grease/oil, fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards, vehicular traffic, vibration and noise, work with machinery; meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing, dexterity and use of both hands and legs appropriate to the duties to be performed.
