The Charlottesville Department of Utilities - Water/Wastewater Division is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III - Department of Utilities who is highly motivated and who strives for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration. This position may be filled as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III depending on qualifications.The preferred hiring range for a Maintenance Worker II is between $18.38 - $18.90 Hourly. ($38,230.40 - $39,312.00 Annually). The preferred hiring range for a Maintenance Worker III is between $19.66 - $22.25 Hourly. ($40,892.80 - $46,280 Annually).As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City's Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect on July 1, 2025. Performs responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools; occasionally operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned. Education, Experience and SkillsMaintenance Worker II Minimum QualificationsAny combination of education and experience equivalent to high school or vocational school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of two (2) years of direct work experience in the field.)General knowledge of maintenance, repair and/or construction activities. General knowledge of mechanical and automotive equipment.Special Requirements: May require a valid VA driver's license by employment start date.May require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.Maintenance Worker II Skills: Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area to which assigned; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.Maintenance Worker IIIMinimum Qualifications:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of two (2) years of direct work experience in the field.)Requires a minimum of one (1) year experience in a similar position as a skilled worker in the maintenance, repair and or construction activity to which assigned;Requires some prior experience in the operation of the equipment to which assigned.Must have valid VA driver's license by employment start date. Physical Conditions & Additional InformationPosition may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Requires the ability to perform strenuous manual labor, often under unfavorable conditions, including considerable walking, lifting, stooping and carrying. Positions in the Department of Utilities are subject to mandatory emergency and stand by call and with minimum response time requirements. Must be able to be contacted by phone in case of emergency and reside within 40 minutes response time to the City Yard located at 305 4th St NW.
