Salary: $66,240.00 - $99,600.00 AnnuallyLocation : Winnetka, ILJob Type: Full-timeJob Number: 20241122Department: Water & ElectricOpening Date: 11/22/2024General Purpose The Water & Electric Maintenance Worker works in a wide variety of capacities, such as, but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, masonry, concrete finishing, equipment operation, landscape restoration, to provide advice to and/or otherwise assist with the installation, expansion, relocation, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system, facilities, auxiliary equipment, and related activities. When required, the individual will also assist in the repair and maintenance of the electric distribution system. Essential Functions:
- Install, inspect, clean, maintain, disassemble, repair, adjust, and replace water mains, water services, fire hydrants, pressure regulators, gate valves, and other water distribution control devices to regulate water pressure and flow in connection with water mains and services, shutoffs, tests, and emergency situations.
- Locate and determine cause of water leaks and adjust water distribution control devices to regulate water pressure and flow in connection with water mains and service line leaks, shutoffs, tests, and emergency situations.
- Maneuver pipe sections, valves, and fittings into position and align, cut, thread, connect, and seal same together.
- Record installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement actions taken.
- Perform minor maintenance on hand and power tools and equipment.
- Demolish or trim vaults and manholes, install and build wooden forms, sheeting, shoring, and bracing for excavation, erect steel reinforcing for concrete vaults and manholes, mix, pour, and/or finish concrete, remove forms when concrete has set, patch cracks in underground vaults and manholes, and brush or spray walls with waterproof compounds.
- Hand dig and backfill trenches or operate trucks, tractors or other equipment to install underground electric and water system components, or signal (verbally or physically) equipment operator to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of equipment in connection with such installation.
- Perform underground locates for water and electric facilities.
- Installs electric and water meters and wiring remote touchpads.
- Perform meter reading for time-of-day and net metering customers.
- Trim trees and brush prior to new construction or repair activities, erect barricades, break up pavement, drive stakes and measure distances from grade stakes, and restore road, curb, sidewalk and landscape to conditions prior to work activity.
- Operate and monitor mobile ventilating equipment to supply fresh air to workers in underground vaults and manholes.
- Confer with and assist other specialized work crews, other departments or utilities, or contractors in the event of emergency, personnel shortage, major construction or maintenance activity, or as otherwise needed.
- Inspect work of private contractors to assure its quality and report any defects to distribution supervisor.
- Recommend maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment, and tools and the recycling of used materials to distribution supervisor, as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- 2-3 years minimum work experience on water distribution systems and/or construction experience preferred.
- Possess or obtain valid Environmental Protection Agency, State of Illinois, Public Water Supply Operator Certificate of Competency, Class D certificate within 24 months of hire.
- Possess or obtain valid Illinois CDL Class A license
Other Requirements The position requires the ability to use and operate motorized vehicles and equipment, common hand and power tools, mobile radios and telephones; must be able to perform fine hand control procedures and physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy objects up to 100 pounds in weight, long distance walking, standing, stooping, kneeling and climbing; effective audio-visual discrimination and perception required; color vision adequate to identify red, yellow, and green; and hearing sufficient to understand verbal direction and to detect abnormal equipment operation and alarms required. Shifts are typically 8 hours in duration (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), 40 hours weekly, but may be extended or altered in the event of emergency, personnel shortage, workload, and/or work in progress. Position has on-call responsibilities be required to work nights, early mornings, weekends, and/or holidays on short notice. Due to the on-call nature of the position, successful candidate must reside within a 60 minute response time to the Village of Winnetka.Work is sometimes required under adverse or unusual conditions such as, but not limited to, cold, hot, wet, dark, dusty, noisy and cramped surroundings. Work is frequently required in close proximity to vehicular traffic and in underground areas near energized electric power.
