Under general supervision, the Management Analyst performs a wide variety of complex analytical, grant administration, and administrative support activities within an assigned functional area. Positions in this class may provide general direction to subordinate staff as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the journey-level class in the Management Analyst series. This class performs routine analytical work that requires previous analytical and grant administration experience. An employee in this class assists higher-level management or supervisory staff in various management tasks and projects covering a range of issues and performs all of the responsibility of a Management Assistant at a more complex level. This class may also include duties within the Water Conservation Analyst classification and may utilize the working job title of “Water Conservation Specialist.”

Education/Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public administration or policy, political science, or a related field, and at least one year of increasingly complex analytical and administrative experience with a governmental agency, preferably within a municipal setting. A master's degree is desirable and may be substituted for one year of related experience.
Knowledge of:
Basic research and report writing techniques and basic research and grant writing techniques; data collection and analysis; functional areas of governmental departments and agencies; and modern office methods, procedures, and practices including automated word processing systems, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software and statistical applications.
Ability to:
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work independently; understand, interpret, and apply related concepts; independently complete a variety of assignments; prioritize multiple work projects and meet deadlines; establish working relationships with other city departments, agencies, and the public.
Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver's License.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is essentially a desk job. Physical demands include occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, some reaching, bending, walking, stooping, and squatting. Ability to hear and speak to the general public and City staff on the telephone and in person. Hand and eye coordination are needed to operate office equipment. Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video/computer display terminal.
Working ConditionsGenerally clean work environment with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, odors, or noise. Requires traveling throughout the City and adjacent areas, and the attendance of occasional night meetings.
