J. Kennedy and Associates, Inc. ( Kennedy and Associates ) is an economic consulting firm specializing in the electric, natural gas, and water utility industries. We provide services in utility rates, resource planning, contract negotiations, and litigation services to industrial and large commercial utility consumers, regulatory commissions, and commission staffs, attorneys general, consumer's counsel and other utility consumers or their representatives.
The Manager of Consulting will be responsible for overseeing project engagements, including directing internal staff members and managing client expectations. The Manager of Consulting will conduct electric utility analytical studies, involving engineering, economic, statistical and/or financial analyses. Work will be performed to support consulting projects in the areas of electric utility generation resource planning, financial analysis, and regulatory process.
Responsibilities
· Actively participate in development of client work product. The Manager of Consulting will review testimony, reports, and discovery responses, and will conduct independent research using industry publications.
· Assist/Manage the development of reports and testimony, including writing up relevant background and independent analyses, and assist in editing, formatting, proofreading, fact-checking, and/or summarizing comments, reports and presentations.
· Manage the development of modeling studies, for example, to assess the costs and benefits of resource planning issues. Project scope may include Integrated Resource Planning, Resource Procurement Activities (RFP, RFI, CPCN), and other demand and supply-side resource studies.
· Perform the analysis and analytical calculations required to develop necessary work product. Develop organized, clean, and methodical workpapers and documentation supporting the analyses and studies performed.
· Perform analysis utilizing expansion planning and production cost models. Evaluate inputs and outputs of utility studies, assess reasonableness, and develop alternative studies using production cost and expansion planning software (Aurora, Plexos, EnCompass, PROMOD, Strategist, etc.)
· Coordinate and manage meetings, schedules, and personnel to ensure deadlines and client satisfaction is ensured. The Project Manager will be responsible for maintaining professional interactions with clients and electric utility personnel.
· Present expert witness testimony in front of State Public Service Commissions detailing project scope completed under the Manager's supervision. Travel likely required.
· Write proposals and participate in other business development activities.
Qualifications
· BA/BS Degree in Quantitative or Engineering Field (Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Electrical Engineering, Industrial/System Engineering, Power Systems, Nuclear Engineering, etc.) MS preferred.
· 10+ years of background in the energy industry, with a preference towards experience with regulated and unregulated utility planning (rates/ratemaking or cost of service, integrated resource planning, resource procurement RFP/CPCN, renewable energy, etc.)
· Experience with Expansion Planning and Production Cost Modeling Software (Aurora, Plexos, EnCompass, System Optimizer/ Planning and Risk, PROMOD, Strategist, IPM, etc.)
· Experience desired in the areas of regression analysis, Monte Carlo simulation studies, load forecasting, reliability analysis, and statistical/probability methodologies.
· Experience and knowledge of regulated and deregulated power markets, and ability to analyze regulatory requirements and legislative statutes. Experience studying ISO/RTO functions and market dynamics.
· Background or experience in legal writing and legal research.
· Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
· Strong verbal and written English communications skills, possess an attention to detail.
· Proactive, planning and problem-solving mindset.
· Ability to manage and complete multiple high-priority projects and activities with strict time-sensitive deadlines
· Testimony experience (preferred, but not required) or similar experience communicating technical positions in writing.
