SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Reporting to the Public Relations Director, the Media Relations Manager is responsible for planning and implementing media strategies that proactively manage the Museum of Science's image and reputation with key local, regional, national, and international audiences, including the media, general public, educators, public officials, and science/technology industry. The Media Relations Manager measurably supports the Museum's initiatives with the goals of increasing awareness mission, vision, and values and creating/reinforcing positive perceptions to help drive attendance and public support of the institution's work within the Boston Science Common. Initiatives include promotion of the overall Museum and its mission, its product portfolio (exhibits, programs, and curriculum), visibility of its thought leaders, advocacy efforts, crisis communications, and more. The Media Relations Manager works collaboratively across the organization to ensure tight strategic and tactical coordination of all media relations activities (outreach efforts, content, calendaring) with other marketing channels and the overall organization to maximize impacts. This position manages media relations staff and works closely with the external public relations agency to ensure that all activities ladder up to overarching institutional objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Develop and execute a long-range media relations strategy that builds awareness of the Museum's impact in three channels: onsite, online, and in classrooms.
* Develop and implement strategies for outreach to approximately 2,000 media contacts
* Maintaining our reputation locally, and expanding our footprint nationally and internationally.
* Oversee the production and distribution of ~100+ media relations content
* Oversee the execution of 4-6 press events
* Oversee and/or respond to 5 to 10 daily incoming requests from media.
* Manage media relations function activities including management of 1 - 3 direct reports
WORK SCHEDULE:
This position is full-time, 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday
REPORTS TO:
Director, Public Relations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Post high school course work, technical degree, associate's degree, business or vocational certificate.
* 5 or more years of environmental health and safety or a related field experience.
* Demonstrated experience of all aspects of media strategy, public relations, crisis management
* Demonstrated experience of executive and organizational thought leadership development.
* Demonstrated expertise managing media relations/earned media strategy and external communications for a major corporate brand or large non-profit, including management of third party agencies and other partners.
* Proven experience launching new products and raising brand visibility locally, nationally through collaboration with marketing partners and support of integrated campaigns.
* Demonstrated ability writing and editing press releases and other related communications (opinion pieces, articles, etc.)
* Demonstrated experience managing a team.
* Previous experience delivering media coaching/training to senior level executives.
STARTING SALARY:
Exempt (Salaried). $90,000-$95,000 annually
