Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, one of the world's leading global law firms with offices in strategic hubs of commerce, law, and government across North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, is seeking to hire a Managing Clerk. Based in the New York office, the Managing Clerk is a member of the firm's Litigation Docket team and is a working docketing specialist, maintaining a litigation docket for the New York and Princeton offices and ensuring that all incoming documents are calendared timely and accurately. Additionally, the Managing Clerk will be a resource for the firm's litigation docketing clerks and specialists in problem solving, research, answering questions and training. A hybrid in-office/remote working schedule is available for this position. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains litigation docket.
  • Ensures compliance and records all incoming and outgoing documents in docket database and accurately calculates and records procedural deadlines and due dates.
  • Advise attorneys on state, local, and federal court rules including court practices. May assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Firmwide Litigation Docketing system maintenance policies and best practices.
  • Manage and coordinate legal services required outside the firm such as service of process, retrieval of documents, etc.
  • Programs, runs, prints, and delivers docket reports and ad hoc reports to attorneys, legal secretaries, and legal staff.
  • Monitors cases in state and federal courts, government and administrative agencies on all active matters; monitors actions in computerized databases, including, but not limited to eTracks and Courtalert.com. Obtains decisions and orders, obtains docket updates and communicates case status changes to responsible attorneys.
  • Verifies docket database accuracy through spot checks, verification of docket entries from incoming mail and by other means.
  • Responsible for electronic filings in assigned courts. Must be familiar with and keep up to date on all filing rules, procedures, and judge's individual practices.
  • Manages all case-specific information in responsible jurisdictions.
  • Acts as liaison with court personnel and establishes and maintains good working relations with court personnel including process servers and couriers.
  • Responds to procedural inquiries and questions, including court research at the direction of attorneys, paralegals and business services colleagues.
  • May assist in the development and implementation of Litigation Docketing procedures and training of Litigation Docket clerks and specialists.
  • Assists in recruiting process for new Litigation Docket clerks and specialists including interviewing and new hire training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university; and
  • Minimum five (5) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Effectively communicates and presents information, as well as responds to procedural inquiries and questions from attorneys and staff.
  • Proficient in searching and retrieving information from court-related databases (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF, CourtAlert.com and Bloomberg) and other on-line sources of case information.
  • Hands-on experience with rules-based calendaring software (e.g., CompuLaw or ProLaw).
  • Must be highly familiar with litigation practice and able to quickly and accurately determine which filings and documents trigger future deadlines.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with federal, state and local court systems, including electronic filing systems (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF).
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Manhattan and New York Civil Practice Law & Rules and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Obtaining certificates of good standing for attorneys from various jurisdictions.
  • Notary preferred.
  • Arrange for legalization of documents for use in foreign countries.
  • Maintain a database of commonly used forms and precedents.
  • Assist attorneys with administration of their PACER and NYSCEF accounts.

The base salary or hourly wage range for this position will be determined during the interview process and will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to prior experience, relevant expertise, current business needs, and market factors. The final salary or hourly wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances. Additionally, salary or hourly wages may be only part of the total compensation package. The total compensation package for this position may also include a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered.
