Brown Rudnick is seeking a Managing Clerk to join the Dispute Resolution & Restructuring department. The Managing Clerk will provide guidance to multiple practice groups/attorneys on court rules and customs, procedural issues/strategies, and practical aspects of pending cases. The Managing Clerk will assume responsibility for the daily docket and court services including court filings, service of pleadings, service of process, motions, and other matters.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain litigation docket and calendar
  • Ensure compliance and record all incoming and outgoing documents in docket database and accurately calculate and record procedural deadlines and due dates
  • Responsible for electronic filings in assigned courts. Must be familiar with and keep up to date on all filing rules, procedures, and judges individual practices
  • Manage all case-specific information in jurisdictions
  • Monitor case progress in assigned courts, obtain decisions and orders, obtain docket updates, and communicate case status changes to responsible attorneys
  • Effectively communicate and present information, as well as respond to procedural inquiries and questions from attorneys and business professionals
  • Act as liaison with court personnel - establish and maintain good working relations with court personnel, process servers, and couriers
  • Establish and manage an internal timetable for completing work assignments and docketing deadlines in a timely and accurate fashion
  • Respond to procedural inquiries and questions, including court research at the direction of attorneys, paralegals, and other business professionals
  • Support projects such as Docket Audits, Outstanding Motions Lists, Appeals Lists, Business Development Lists, etc.
  • Responsible for understanding and researching court procedural rules and determining if procedures need to be updated
  • Keep abreast of developments, procedures, and rules in the forums where the firm practices, including general state and federal practice
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 5 + years of Managing Clerk experience in a law firm environment
  • Bachelors degree
  • Proficient in searching and retrieving information from court-related databases (e.g. Courtlink, PACER, eLaw, CourtAlert) and other on-line sources of case information
  • Hands-on experience with rules-based calendaring software (e.g. CourtAlert, CompuLaw or ProLaw)
  • Must be highly familiar with litigation practice and able to quickly and accurately determine which filings and documents trigger future deadlines
  • Demonstrated familiarity with federal, state and local court systems, including electronic filing systems
  • Demonstrated familiarity with New York Civil Practice Law & Rules and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite - specifically, Word & Excel, along with Adobe Acrobat, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written

Salary range based on experience level and location is estimated to be in the range of $100,000-140,000.
