In order to be considered for this role, after clicking Apply Now above and being redirected, you must fully complete the application process on the follow-up screen.Job Function: The Managing Director of the Sport Science Institute (SSI) is responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of SSI operations, including the three SSI services lines: Policy, Education and Strategic Engagement; Health Promotion; and Sports Medicine. This position is also responsible for SSI strategic planning and operational oversight, personnel management; governance support; national representation and leadership; budget management; and membership outreach. Reports directly to the SSI Senior Vice-President / NCAA Chief Medical Officer. Job Responsibilities
  • Support the leadership of the Senior Vice President of SSI and Chief Medical Officer and collaborate on the development and execution of the strategic direction of SSI.
  • Leads and manages day-to-day operational oversight and direction to all SSI programs and initiatives developed to achieve the SSI's strategic policy goals.
  • Serves as Unit Fiscal Officer. Manage and oversee department budget and unit business relationship, including the provision of regular financial forecasting.
  • Represents the SSI and the NCAA on health and safety issues and serve as liaison to medical organizations and/or sport governing bodies as requested and/or as directed by the SSI SVP/CMO
  • Supervises three SSI directors and the SSI coordinator. Directs and oversees the department's personnel needs, including hiring and onboarding, performance management, policy compliance, and other functions as needed.
  • Provides leadership and management to SSI research initiatives, including in addition to relevant governance work and oversight of the financial and business management of the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) / SSI grants.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • Education RequiredBachelor's degree required; Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of eight to ten years of administrative, policy and/or legislative work experience, preferably within the context of medicine / health care and/or a membership organization.
  • Eight years of personnel management and/or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including effective problem-solving skills, fairness, decisiveness, and the ability to manage complex situations.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to effectively engage and collaborate with C-Suite executives. This includes the capacity to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively, tailor messages to diverse audiences, and facilitate high-level discussions that drive strategic decision-making.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of individuals.
  • Established background and knowledge of college athletics.
  • Additional preference will be given to the candidates with the following:
    • Doctorate (PhD, EdD, or DrPH) in sport or exercise science, athletic training, public health, epidemiology or a related field, or MD/DO with special qualification in sports medicine.
    • National reputation as a leader in the fields of sport science or exercise science.
    • Demonstrated teaching skills and success with scholarly publications.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the NCAA's structure and function.
  • Estimated Travel Required < 20%
  • This position will be based out of the national office in Indianapolis, Indiana. Current work environment is hybrid; 3 days in the office and 2 days are remote.

Experience Required
  • 8 year(s): Personnel management and/or supervisory experience.
  • 8 - 10 years: Administrative, policy and/or legislative work experience, preferably within the context of medicine / health care and/or a membership organization.
