Together we can improve the human condition through biotechnology...and That's Good Science!How this role drives the company forward:The Manufacturing Engineer III is responsible to follow quality and technical procedures for instrument manufacturing and substrate processing within the production facility. The position requires the ability to work independently on established assignments and determine methods and procedures on new assignments. Individual exercises good judgment and displays initiative in selecting techniques and evaluation processes for obtaining solutions to complex problems. Communicates effectively to management and other departments when presenting data on improvement proposals or projects. This position is expected to work effectively with internal cross-functional teams, Engineering, Quality Control and Quality Assurance, leading tasks on improvements or solutions. Liaison with vendors and suppliers on troubleshooting experiments and new projects.The Manufacturing Engineer III role is office-based.How you will make an impact:In this role, you will ensure manufacturing excellence through careful development and execution of quality and technical procedures. As a senior engineer in Systems Manufacturing, you will lead process and design changes, troubleshoot advanced technical issues, and work closely with QA, R&D and critical suppliers to improve all aspects of instrumentation, consumables and processing. You will support field service to rapidly solve complex issues in the field and create rework and remedy plans. With your sound engineering background you will be a vocal advocate for manufacturing, focusing on DFM and creating robust work instructions and supporting documentation. You will evaluate existing processes and conduct experiments to validate updates and introduce automation, jigs and fixtures and complete process overhauls. In this role, you will use your engineering background in a hands-on manner to manufacture instruments and substrates of the highest quality, thus providing TBUSA's customers with exciting tools that can help advance scientific discovery.What will you do:
  • Operate robotic printers for the manufacture of microfluidic chips.
  • Troubleshoot chip substrates by performing incoming inspection via Keyence and MicroVu optical inspection equipment, interpreting results and establishing new acceptability criteria as business requirements grow.
  • Assemble, test and package multi-sample instruments, automated liquid handlers, imaging systems, and real time thermocyclers.
  • Proficient in using hand tools, soldering, and reworking cable assemblies, operating crimp tools, multimeters, DAQs and manual mills and/or lathes.
  • Familiar with special handling cases for optical elements, ESD sensitive electronics and controlled environment processing.
  • Liaison to instrument and robotic vendors resolving problems and implementing process improvement projects.
  • Able to interpret and follow engineering drawings and manufacturing SOPs to assemble complex electrical, mechanical and optical assemblies and operate bio-printing instruments.
  • Follows quality control test procedures to perform system tests. Analyze and interpret system test data for pass/fail results. Keeps accurate test records and escalates changes as necessary.
  • Collaborates with software engineers on software upgrades helping to design validation plans and analyze results of the upgrade on the performance of instruments.
  • Identifies improvements, redlines documents and drawings, initiates and implements ECN tasks where changes may be beneficial.
  • Maintains records to comply with regulatory and safety requirements, good manufacturing practices, and standard operating procedures for laboratory environments.
  • Proficient in identifying needs for jigs and fixturing and experience designing tight tolerance and automated fixturing to improve process yield and assembly times.
  • Writes and implements manufacturing documentation for systems manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborates with Design Engineers on improvements for performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost reductions. Implements tasks to meet these objectives.
  • Ensures the effective use of materials and equipment in producing quality products at minimum cost.
  • Able to interpret in-house and vendor drawings and extrapolate incoming inspection criteria based on critical function in the context of the larger assembly.
  • Prioritizes production schedules based on new product introduction and stock demands.
  • Works with purchasing and planning to maintain optimum safety stock for all components, including spare parts and assemblies. Maintains inventory accuracy and integrity.
  • Assists with maintenance of production and laboratory equipment.
  • Interfaces with Design Engineers to transfer new instruments into Operations.
  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
How will you get here?
  • AS/BS degree in a technical discipline in engineering or life science.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience building and testing complex electromechanical and optical instrumentation or similar instrumentation required.
  • Previous experience with microfluidics, precision low volume liquid handlers and robotic printers or dispensers required.
  • Proficient in the use of a document management system for version control of drawings, such as Arena.
  • Proficient using a 3D CAD design software, such as SOLIDWORKS.
You are amazing if you have:
  • Experience working in a semi-conductor or plate handling facility.
  • PLC, C++ or other programming language fluency.
  • Experience in low to medium volume assembly lines.
  • Previous experience troubleshooting injection molding and machining operations.
  • Experience with automated degreasing and etching operations.

The US base salary range for this full-time position, expected to be located in San Jose, CA, is $140,000 - $150,000 USD. This range may be modified at any time at our sole discretion.
