THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Mid-Level Marine Mechanical Engineer (Propulsion) to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)'s Ship Design Team in Baltimore, MD. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with one or more of the following: ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.Typical Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, to include, but not limited to: power supply and propulsion systems.
- Research and develop ship propulsion systems, to include, but not limited to: diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, and apply to applicable design and requirements.
- Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
- Conduct analyses propulsion systems and types, lead development of technical data packages and reviews.
- Conduct trade studies regarding ship configuration.
Location: Full time onsite at USCG Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore, MD. May be limited local remote flexibility with customer approval.Travel:Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks. Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $80,000 - 110,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience. US Citizenship Required:Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment. Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.Security Clearance Eligibility Required:This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred); OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire. Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- At least three (3) to five (5) years of progressive experience in Marine Mechanical fields.
- Overall experience must include at least three (3) years of documented experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components.
- Familiarity with ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations.
- Experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs preferred.
- Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.
- Proficient with common productivity software.
- Strong communications skills.
