Job Description:
The Sheriff's Office is looking for candidates to be a part of the Marine Unit. This Unit's primary function is to maintain order and safety on the waters of Ottawa County by performing patrol activities. In addition, the Marine Unit performs several associated functions to include: safe boater education, search and rescue operations, body recovery and boat livery inspections.To be considered, a candidate must have attained the age of 21 years, possess a valid Michigan driver's license and be a high school graduate or equivalent. Candidates must be willing to commit themselves to required training offered by the department. Candidates will be expected to provide their own uniforms, firearm and related equipment as designated by the Sheriff's Office. Candidates wishing to be considered will need to be able to deal positively with the general public while portraying a positive image of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. Marine deputies will be required to work a minimum of 100 hours annually (January 1 - December 31).Candidates being considered for the Marine Unit can expect a thorough background check along with a TB test and drug screen. Some knowledge of law enforcement processes and/or techniques preferred.This is a part-time, non-benefited, position not to exceed working 1,000 hours per year.The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:* Patrols and enforces State and Local laws on County waters* Investigates accidents and complaints and prepares written reports concerning all activities* Performs routine maintenance of assigned equipment* Educates the public on safe boating practices; facilitates formal boating safety courses; and issues boating safety certificates upon successful completion* Must maintain open communication with higher rank and follow all policies and procedures of the Sheriff''s Office, including the general policing philosophy of the SheriffHigh school diploma, or equivalent is required. Knowledge of some law enforcement processes and/or tecniques is preferred but not necessary.1. Ability to swiftly learn law enforcement methods, practices and procedures.2. Ability to gain a good working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and to attain efficiency in the methods and practices of criminal investigation.3. Ability to carry out instructions from a licensed MCOLES officer and swiftly adopt an effective and sound course of action. Ability to deal fairly and effectively with the public.4. Good powers of observation, sound judgment, and good moral character.5. Excellent physical and mental condition, courage, strength, agility, and ability to withstand stress.6. Proficiency in the use of firearms.7. Ability to pass rigid physical examination and thorough background investigation.8.
