Primary Purpose :
This is a training position, preparing the employee to provide expertise in continuous process improvement, and workflow optimization for mass spectroscopy based testing in the clinical laboratory. The Mass Spec Application Engineer I will apply knowledge of chromatography, mass spectroscopy, automation, data analysis, statistics, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry to the implementation of improvements and workflow solutions to mass spectroscopy based tests in a fast paced production clinical laboratory. Performs all functions below with direct supervision.

Essential Functions :
Develops skills to serve as technical advisor for mass spectroscopy assays and instrumentation
Gathers user requirements, and contributes to mass spectroscopy based test improvement and optimization
Assists clinical operations or support teams with problem solving in regards to mass spectroscopy based tests.
Validates instruments and writes technical documents as needed
Prepares for and executes instrument installation, operation, and performance qualifications (IQOQPQ)
Analyzes the impact of version upgrades on existing systems and provides recommendations on a plan of action related to system upgrades
Assists the project teams in the cost analysis of new projects, supports capital acquisition, and provides justification for upgrades and additional equipment
Trains staff and works with the lab to develop training modules as necessary
Tracks and manages changes in mass spectroscopy based tests and documentation
Develops protocols for maintenance and monitoring of instrument performance
Effectively communicates project progression and any hurdles with team members and other key stakeholders
Develops modifications for current procedures in order to improve cost and/or labor efficiency
Performs literature review to adequately obtain and access all options for assay improvement

Physical and Other Requirements :
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently communicate with others
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling
Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance

Education
Required
+ Bachelor's Degree or better in Biological, Chemical, or Scientific Field
Preferred
+ Master's Degree or better in Biological, Chemical, or Scientific Field
+ PhD or better in Biological, Chemical, or Scientific Field
Licenses & Certifications
Preferred
+ Applicable ASCP or AAB
Experience
Required
+ Bachelors degree in a Chemistry, Biology, Medical Laboratory Scientist or related degree and one year of experience as a Mass Spec Application Specialist 2 or MLS/CT Specialist 2
+ Or Master's degree in a Chemistry, Biology, Medical Laboratory Scientist or related degree and two years experience directly related to performing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and mass spectroscopy based testing
+ Or Ph.D. in a relevant technical field
Preferred
+ Prior experience as a Field Service Engineer, Application Engineer, Mass Spectroscopy R&D or Development Scientist
