Position Information Come join our team and assist in laboratory and materials testing for ongoing construction and maintenance projects. The ideal candidate is a team player that has experience in, or is eager to learn, materials testing procedures for roadway work in a laboratory environment. Our candidate may also work on project inspection teams in the field, working with our contractors and business partners to improve the safety and mobility of our roadways. For a complete list of our total compensation package please visit our website at: Total Compensation Package To view benefits available to all State of Texas employees visit: Benefits at a Glance (ERS.texas.gov) Position Description Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Essential Duties:
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) documents and files; assists in PS&E processing for letting, to include reproducing and distributing documents.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:Education: No education required. Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years experience* *Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications . Licenses and Certifications:
      • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class A CDL within 120 days of employment. Competencies:
  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • The use of computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication
  • Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
