Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Material Scientist to join our Global Measurement Science Group at Wilmington Research Center in Delaware. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the central R&D function. This position will report to Material Science Section Lead.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Function as a measurement scientist with strong knowledge of materials science, polymer science, and rheology.

* Design, initiate, and perform experiments for characterization of complex polymeric systems.

* Develop structure/property/performance relationships for new product development.

* Independently compile, analyze, and interpret analytical data, present research work to internal and external audiences.

* Manage and support multiple projects, estimate timelines and resources, and coordinate efforts to meet timeline.

* Work closely with other R&D sites and technical support teams to solve challenging technical problems for customers.

* Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety

* Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

* MS/PhD degree in the field of polymer physics, materials science, analytical chemistry, or related discipline

* Strong competency in applied rheology of both models and experimentation to understand structure/properties relationship of polymers, materials and formulations

* Strong hands-on skills in sample preparation and materials characterization

* demonstrated capability of technical writing and oral presentations

* demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

* Must be authorized to work in the United State

* Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times

* The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different opportunities

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

* 1-2 years of relevant industrial experience is preferred.

* Experience in thermal analysis (i.e., DSC) and microscopy (i.e., AFM) is desirable.

* Experience in chromatography (i.e., SEC/GPC)

* Experience in numerical analysis and image processing.
