OverviewThis position will carry out the functions and responsibilities of the metallic Materials Engineering section of Department 342 with a focus on the development of Additive Manufacturing. The job involves planning, coordination and liaison with other EB departments, other shipyards, vendors, and the customer, and execution of the following specific functions and responsibilities:
- Provide Materials Engineering input into Design and Engineering Additive Manufacturing projects, from initial concepts to final design, including material selections, materials evaluations, and technical liaison with other departments and the customer
- Specification selection and interpretation
- Providing technical assistance and direction to Operations in the processing of materials and fabrication of components
- Adjudication of material non-conformances (e.g., defects, improper heat treatment, etc.)
- Contributing metallurgical expertise to multi-disciplinary teams
- Perform material failure analyses and related engineering investigations
- Practical and meaningful interpretation of case reports and studies
- Maintain liaison with Government and private laboratories, and industry relative to materials technology
- Overall support of all Engineering departments
QualificationsRequired:
- BS in Materials Engineering with a concentration/interest in metallurgy or BS in Metallurgical Engineering
Preferred:
- MS in Materials Engineering with a concentration/interest in metallurgy or MS in Metallurgical Engineering
- Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding or other heavy fabrication
- Experience with Additive Manufacturing processes, including direct-energy deposition and laser powder bed fusion.
SkillsApplicants should be familiar with Additive Manufacturing processes, mill production of metal products, casting production, heat treatment, mechanical properties of materials, mechanical property testing and metallographic techniques. Knowledge of material specifications, standards and technical publications, including Military, Federal, ASTM, and ASM, is desirable. The applicants must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, and it is expected that the applicant is able to write technical reports and correspondences using good grammar with correct spelling and punctuation. Applicants must be personable, interested in working as part of a team in a fast paced environment, interested in learning, willing to consult with coworkers, and comfortable in interacting directly both with hourly technicians and with upper management. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
