Summary This position is located at the Menlo Park Division, VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, performing warehouse work that involves receiving, storing, and shipping a variety of subsistence and supplies. The incumbent undertakes the full spectrum of warehouse functions and may serve as the senior nonsupervisory worker of the the warehouse. The incumbent also serves as a relief for WG-6 cook's as needed. Responsibilities Major Duties include but are not limited to the following: Maintains clean and orderly storage areas. Responsible for the proper receipt, inspection, storage and safety of all subsistence and supplies. Receives and stores all products delivered to the service. Ensures that subsistence is received in a and sanitary manner, and that accurate quantities are received and added into inventory appropriately. Makes sound decisions in moving stock and has full responsibility of stock areas. Communicate to appropriate team members when stock items are low, close to expiration dates, or show signs of damage. Assists in ordering food based on forecasting in accordance with menu requirements. Assists in the development of plans to designate or change storage space, storage location, organization and arrangement of stock, and the identification of high and low usage items. Completes inventory of all frozen/refrigerated foods, other subsistence items and operating supplies. Maintains necessary records such as the Daily Log sheet indicating times spent in delivery runs, problems encountered and notations regarding fuel and fluid levels on the truck. Responsible for maintaining the proper sanitation and maintenance for the delivery truck. Performs duties that require proficiency in special procedures and a broad knowledge of service operations, such as food preparation, dis washing, dry and refrigerated storage, and foods and beverage serving. Processes and verifies receiving reports or invoices in accordance with guidance from the supervisor. Inspects all incoming shipments for obvious spoilage or damage according to Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and FDA Food Code guidelines. Loads cargo properly onto the vehicle, using appropriate tie-downs such as chains, binders, or straps for transit on public roads. Operates a variety of kitchen equipment which utilizes gas, electricity, steam, or microwave heat sources. Disassembles and assembles component parts and accessories for cleaning and follows safety procedures regarding the operation of equipment to avoid personal injury or damage to the equipment. Checks for produce delivery shortages and/or overages. Verifies weights of delivered gods, when appropriate. Screens and identifies shipping and receiving documents for discrepancies. Initiates and records corrective action for any delinquencies/deficiencies. Works alone or with instructions from the Food Production Supervisor, or high-level employee, perform a full range of simple cooking by preparing and cooking items. Prepares and cooks different variety of foods and prepares different types of nutritional meals. Serves production style, prepares, and cooks a variety of menu items including regular and special diet meals and modifies food textures and dessert items. Prepares all forms of hot cereals, broil meats, prepares and cooks concentrated or dehydrated soups, sauces, and gravies and makes cold sandwich fillings. Physical Requirements: Incumbent is often required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 70 pounds. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty or poorly lighted. Is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls and injury from falling stock or material handling equipment. May be exposed to dirt, dust, grease and solvents and to high noise levels in mechanized work areas. Work requires the wearing of steel-toed shoes, and may require special protective gloves, jackets or aprons.
