As a teacher, you will be responsible for cultivating the students' interest in education and development. Your responsibilities will include teaching the appropriate course of study following the state standards for the subject matter by using various instructional strategies that meet individual learning styles. As a teacher of Garfield Heights City Schools, you should have a passion and love for teaching students in an urban community. Our ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of teaching best practices and vital innovation and interpersonal skills. NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance Essential Functions:
  • Prepare and deliver lesson plans with the ability to modify them accordingly during the school year
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of student's progress and development
  • Utilize research-based best practices in daily planning and classroom instruction
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom
  • Create a positive classroom environment for students to learn in
  • Utilize school-approved curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students
  • Implement school-wide culture expectations and norms
  • Communicate and meet with families regarding the academic and social-emotional growth of their child
  • Incorporate technology skills into daily classroom practice to support learning
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of non-instructional activities, as needed
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc. to keep current on relevant issues
  • Support school, enforce school rules and policies
  • Participate on building level teams and/or teacher based teams and/or district level teams
  • Organize various subject specific programs within assigned building, e.g., Art show
  • Work closely with administrators as part of development teams to discuss and implement new practices such as team teaching, semester projects, etc.
  • Act as department chairperson when requested and agreed upon
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Serve on committees and cocurricular activities as agreed upon
  • Supervise student teachers
  • Discipline students when necessary following the district PBIS model
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in a timely, appropriate manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Assistant or designee
About You:
  • Active and current state of Ohio teaching license in the appropriate content area
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field
  • High level of comfort working in a growth-focused coaching environment based on frequent observations, debriefs, action planning, and progress monitoring
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to appropriately manage confidential information
  • Able to supervise students of various ages in different school settings (playground, cafeteria, etc.)
  • Training in varied instructional designs
  • Skills that foster and facilitate learning and classroom management
  • Knowledge in child development and an understanding of age appropriate tasks
  • Educational pedagogy
  • Student/teacher professional relationship
  • Technology skills eg. electronic grades, moodle
  • Basic first aid
  • Ability to pass federal and state criminal background checks
  • Experience working within an urban environment

Elementary School students in the GHCS also participate in such valuable literacy programs as LETRs and social/emotional initiatives as the Zones of Regulation. The GHCS places a great deal of emphasis at all levels of education on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) and each school has won awards from the State of Ohio for encouraging and promoting positive behavior. A wide variety of co-curricular offerings are available to students of all ages in the Garfield Heights City Schools as well. Such opportunities include more than 18 varsity sports, the district's show choir, Music Express, Marching Band, Theater, A 'Capella Choir, National Honor Society, Student Council, Glass Ceiling, Future Engineers, and more. These co-curricular offerings are award-winning on the state, regional and local levels.
