Job Description:
This is a pastoral role for the Mclean Bible Church Montgomery County Location (MBC MoCo). Montgomery County is the largest county in Maryland with a population of over one million people. It's widely known for its ethnic and cultural diversity, economic affluence, high percentage of adults with postgraduate degrees, as well as being a hub for scientific research and US government offices. Montgomery County, along with bordering areas, provides a unique opportunity to reach the nations for Christ in a post-Christian context. MBC MoCo is a multigenerational church family that includes young adults, families, transient professionals, and long-time residents, representing all kinds of ethnic, social, and cultural backgrounds. Our church is vibrant in worship and zealous for good works, plus the spread of the gospel among the nations within our local area. The Associate Pastor, in support and under the guidance of the MBC MoCo Location Pastor, will provide a combination of pastoral and executive leadership, plus, take a leading role in reimagining ministry approaches to effectively reach and impact a post-Christian culture. The Associate Pastor will also serve on the MBC MoCo pastoral leadership team, and join a vibrant staff team as they plan and execute on the day-to-day functions of MBC MoCo. Duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions)The following items describe some of the ways this individual will accomplish this task:
  • Pastoral Leadership:
  • Work closely with the Location Pastor (and lay pastors) to provide pastoral leadership for all of MBC MoCo to be a healthy church (12 Traits) on mission.
  • Teach the Word in various ministry settings including churchwide classes or leadership meetings at MBC MoCo.
  • Encourage and equip the church family to be disciples who make more disciples in neighborhoods across Montgomery County and among nations throughout the world.
  • Assist in the care and oversight of the congregation through Church Groups and pastoral counseling.
  • Assist with officiating weddings and funerals for MBC MoCo members.
  • Assist with pastoral visitations for MBC MoCo members.
  • Assist in leading different elements of Sunday Worship gatherings including corporate prayer, communion, baptisms, leader commissionings and announcements.
  • Oversee the process for baptisms, managing and collaborating with MBC MoCo baptism coordinators.
  • Commit to belonging to a Church Group and leading a network of Church Group leaders in fulfilling MBC's strategy and structure for Church Groups.
  • Attend necessary staff and leadership meetings.
  • Attend mandatory MBC MoCo events (e.g., church picnics, prayer nights).
  • Participate in the overall life of the church as an active member.
  • Ministry Leadership
  • Provide oversight over local ministriesincluding Connect, Communities, Classes, and Outreach (ministry responsibilities may shift depending on the candidate's gifting).
  • Ensure local ministry strategy aligns with the broader strategies of MBC while addressing the unique needs and opportunities of Montgomery County.
  • Assist in growing a healthy, Christ-exalting, gospel-saturated culture for both staff and serve teams.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and delegate ministry responsibilities to deacon-qualified leaders who assist in leading local ministries.
  • Connect: Develop and oversee MBC MoCo's strategy in creating a welcoming environment on Sunday mornings.
  • Recruit, develop and supervise a Connect Ministry leader.
  • Collaborate with the Connect Ministry leader in developing a Welcome Teams strategy and leadership team (greeters, ushers, kids check-in, parking, security, etc.)
  • Implement a clear and effective next steps strategy to guide first-time guests from visitor status to meaningful involvement in our church. This includes an easily accessible pathway and efficient processes.
  • Develop and oversee our follow-up process for people who have indicated they are new Christians or are interested in becoming a Christian.
  • Communities: Oversee the development of all MBC MoCo Communities. These are mid-sized environments that are designed to help people find fellowship with others and grow in their relationship with God. These communities may include MBC MoCo Men's Ministry, Women's Ministry, and Bible studies, etc.
  • Recruit, develop, and supervise our Community ministry leaders.
  • Ensure that our MBC MoCo Communities are healthy, effective, and aligned with our overall ministry strategy.
  • Classes: Manage and collaborate with the MBC MoCo Director of Classes in developing and implementing a cohesive plan for classes, seminars, and conferences.
  • Local Outreach: Manage and collaborate with the MBC MoCo Director of Local Outreach in leading the strategy for meeting urgent physical and spiritual needs in our county.
  • Global Outreach: Collaborate with the MBC Global Outreach team in developing and sending out global missionaries to unreached people groups around the world.
  • Security: Collaborate with the MBC Director of Security and MBC MoCo's First Response Team in maintaining safety protocols in order to prevent and respond to crisis situations.
  • Qualifications
    • A proven disciple-maker who, by God's grace, has made disciples who make disciples
    • A passionate disciple of Jesus who abides in Christ and demonstrates the biblical requirements for pastors
    • A spiritually mature person who demonstrates that maturity in his personal and public life
    • A theologically grounded shepherd and teacher who agrees with MBC doctrine and teaching
    • A servant leader who has demonstrated the ability to lead others sacrificially on mission
    • An effective implementor who can execute a vision across the life and ministries of a church
    • A humble learner who continually gains insight and pursues improvement
    • An effective communicator in both speech and writing
    • Minimum five years of pastoral ministry and/or executive leadership experience preferred
    • Master of Arts in Ministry or Theology or its equivalent preferred from an accredited seminary or School of Theology
