Position Type: Transportation/Mechanic HelperDate Posted: 8/1/2024Location: Transportation DepartmentPosition: Mechanic's Helper Job Type: Full Time Contract: 260 days; twelve-month employee Salary Scale:Per approved board scale FLSA Status: Non-exempt General Definition of Work: Performs semi-skilled work in the transportation/maintenance department. Assists in keeping school vehicles in the best operating condition at all times. Transports pupils to and from school and special events, and related work as apparent or assigned as needed. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Assistant Director/ Director of Transportation. Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Essential Functions: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Assists mechanics in performing light vehicle maintenance. ? Fuels vehicles and checks oil. ? Cleans and maintains orderly appearance of the bus shop and grounds. ? Drives school bus or automobile; picks up and delivers students to and/or from school facilities, special events and field trips. ? Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle; reports operating and equipment deficiencies. ? Maintains internal cleanliness of assigned vehicle. ? Obeys traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus and automobile operations. ? Transports only authorized students. ? Assist with picking up vehicle parts, tires, and running errands as needed. ? Reports all accidents and completes required reports. ? Conducts periodic emergency vehicle evacuation drills. ? Records mileage; maintains various records and prepares a variety of reports on activities. ? Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as necessary. ? Will serve as the Activities Coordinator for after school for a period of two semesters within the current school year. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of the transportation of students; ability to assist students with patience and understanding; good physical and mental health; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, parents, students and the general public; ability to work in all makes and models with and/or without climate control. Education and Experience Less than a high school education and minimal experience working with children, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements New Kent County Public Schools Job Description: Mechanic's Helper Revised: July 2024 Valid driver's licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia; Commercial Driver's License strongly preferred with Class B, P, and S Endorsements to include Air Brakes Skill Test; and zero or plus points on driving record; or the ability to obtain a CDL with proper endorsements within six months of employment. Marginal Functions: While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members. Performance Aptitudes Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with visitors and clients. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages as needed; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs as needed. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. ADA Compliance Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Most tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
