JOB DESCRIPTION

General Statement of Duties

Under the general supervision of the immediate supervisor, the mechanic is responsible for the entry level mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of gasoline powered fleet cars and trucks for the City.

Essential Functions

* Performs routine maintenance on City vehicles;

* Repairs tires including installation and or replacement;

* Performs diagnosis and repair to brake systems, cooling systems, steering and suspension systems;

* Performs minor tune ups and repairs;

* Assists other Mechanics when necessary;

* Repairs and overhauls trucks and other engineering equipment. May do welding as required. Makes tests to locate defects in operation and as a check on repairs before returning equipment to service;

* May perform work on small engine and equipment;

* Performs related work as required.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, reaching, crawling, and handling, sitting, pushing, and pulling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, with a 40-hour work week. Incumbent must have the ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends, if needed. Participation in City sponsored special events, trainings, or meetings may be required.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

High School graduation or an acceptable equivalency diploma and vocational training are required.

Two (2) years experience in general automotive maintenance.

Specialized technical training in automotive repair. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Possession of a valid, appropriate Texas (Class A) driver's license preferable and an acceptable driving record.

Pre-employment drug screen and physical required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge -Knowledge of construction, design, repair and adjustment of diesel motors and of the common types of construction equipment where such motors are used for power, such as graders, rollers and bulldozers. Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for major and minor repairs of diesel motors and diesel powered construction equipment. Knowledge of both light and heavy duty electrical system in regard to their role in the proper functioning of engineering equipment Knowledge of the principles of operation of diesel fueled and gasoline internal combustion engines. Ability to diagnose defects and failures of diesel motors and diesel powered equipment. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Skills - Skills in the process of general traffic control maintenance. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Talking to others to convey information effectively. Teaching others how to do something. Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Determining how a system should work a dhow changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.

Abilities - The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas through spoken words and sentences.
