Assist other fleet shops with repairs as needed during ice and snow events. Job Responsibilities1. Perform scheduled and unscheduled repairs, inspections, tune-ups, and overhauls on automotive and heavy gasoline and diesel equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, rollers, sweepers, snowblowers, loaders, blades, bulldozers, scrapers, seeders, mowers, trailers, and other light and heavy construction equipment. This may include adjusting, diagnosing, repairing, and/or replacing hydraulics, fuel systems, brakes, drivetrains, transmissions, cooling and heating systems, body and chassis, steering systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, conveyors, wheels, axles, tires, suspension systems, computer and sensor systems, etc.2. Perform routine preventive maintenance, DOT safety checks, and repairs on City vehicles and equipment, including repair and replacement of brooms, skids, cutting edges, brakes, drivechains, conveyors, lights, batteries, safety equipment, tires, filters, oil, hydraulic leaks, hydraulic hoses, etc.3. Assist in the training and direction of permanent or temporary employees.4. Maintain daily records of parts, labor, and materials used in, and repairs made to, vehicles and equipment.5. Design, weld, adapt, fabricate, and rebuild specialized equipment and tools; modify and redesign existing equipment; and repair and maintain stationary mechanical equipment.6. Assist in the development of repair schedules and assist in the planning and budgeting for purchases of equipment and tools.7. Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, hauling snow, shoveling sidewalks, or assisting other mechanics in the maintenance of snow removal equipment.8. Perform other duties or functions that may be necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position. Minimum QualificationsGraduation from high school or GED certification, automotive/diesel trade school, and a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a journeyman mechanic; or any such combination of education, experience, or training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.Must possess small hand tools, metric and standard, suitable for repair of light and heavy truck, automotive, and construction equipment.Certification in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) on medium-/heavy-duty truck brakes is required; other certifications, under ASE in automobile or medium/heavy truck, are desirable. Must obtain truck brakes ASE certification within one year of hire.Willing to work standby and extended hours when required.Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire a valid Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement. Hazardous materials endorsement may be required for employees assigned to perform specific duties. Supplemental Information
- Knowledge in the safe operation of light and heavy automotive and construction equipment.
- Knowledge of the essential principles of gasoline and diesel combustion engines, electronics, hydraulics, pressure systems, and cooling systems, including knowledge of the materials, methods, and standard practices used in analyzing and repairing automotive and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of out-of-service criteria under North American Standard DOT.
- Basic knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Windows.
- Skill in the use of tools, equipment, electronic diagnostic equipment, and machines used in maintaining and repairing automotive and heavy equipment.
- Ability to diagnose defective automotive and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required when working around and with heavy-duty chemicals, asbestos dust, engine exhaust, power tools, welders, machinery, and automotive and heavy equipment.
- Ability to read and understand electrical and hydraulic schematics, hydraulic flow charts, and other light and heavy equipment repair manuals.
- Ability to perform welding and brazing tasks and to make small engine repairs and adjustments.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
