Macon County Board of Education Job Description for Mechanic Shop Assistant Position Summary: The Shop Assistant supports the transportation department by assisting mechanics, driving school buses as needed, and maintaining the facility and grounds. This role requires flexibility, effective communication, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The Shop Assistant must adhere to all safety and school board policies, contributing to the smooth operation of transportation services for the school district. Reports To: Director of Transportation Classification: Full-Time (Classified) FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Work Term: 240 Days Compensation: MCBOE Salary Schedule Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Class B CDL License with P and S endorsements (or willing to obtain)
- Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with routine maintenance and repairs on school buses and other vehicles
- Perform minor repairs under the supervision of a certified mechanic
- Operate school buses on scheduled routes or for special events and field trips as needed
- Sweep, mop, and clean the shop area and office spaces
- Dispose of waste materials in accordance with safety regulations
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding job assignments and progress
- Report any safety hazards or maintenance needs to supervisors
- Respond to emergency breakdowns or other unexpected issues
- Follow Macon County Board of Education policies and procedures
- Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed.
- Attend training sessions and staff meetings as required.
- Other Duties as Assigned:
- Participate in inventory management, including ordering and stocking parts.
- Assist in the preparation of vehicles for inspections.
- Provide support during transportation department events and activities.
- Perform additional tasks to support the overall function of the transportation department.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology and/or Superintendent.
