Provides technical knowledge and information. May issues summonses.Essential FunctionsVerifies field construction complies with code requirements and approved plans.Performs Damage Assessment after major weather events.Investigates code complaints, issues notices to correct, notices of violation, stop work orders and summons if required.Testify in court on rare occasions as required.Possess ability to use computer software, computers, and mobile field devices for data entry.Be able to communicate well, via in person, phone, email, and electronic inspection results.Reviews construction methods related to the installation of mechanical systems and equipment.Consults with contractors, architects, engineers, and building managers to discuss and resolve code issues.Ensures quality, accuracy, and completeness of all projects and accompanying records and reports.Conducts acceptance tests, and field inspections for new installations, repairs, and modifications.Must have a wide range of construction knowledge.Conducts administrative duties by maintaining records of inspections, inspection results, notices of violation, stop work orders, inspection approvals and those requiring corrective action, organize scheduled inspections and organize complaint investigations.Education/ExperienceWork requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.Required:Three years of experience and general knowledge in at least one of the following areas: building construction, building, fire or housing inspections, plumbing, electrical or mechanical trades, fire protection, elevators, property maintenance, real estate, land use, or zoning, two years of which should be in Building Code inspections in primary discipline (Mechanical).Strongly Preferred:Experience with HVAC systemsAdditional Information & RequirementsValid Driver's License required.Virginia State DHCD or ICC certifications must be obtained within 18 months of employment.Commercial Mechanical Inspector and Residential Mechanical Inspector certifications.Special Police Commission with background check.Work Schedule: M-F, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, 40 hours per week ½ hour lunchSigning Bonus: This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.RetirementIf you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.
