Job Summary

The associate at this level prepares detailed part and product specifications with light supervision and input from engineers. These specifications include detail drawings, 3D CAD data, Bills of Materials, and Engineering Standards. This associate has the ability to creatively solve design problems and manage engineering changes.

Essential Job Functions *

Drawing from a foundation of prior experience, generates engineering component and assembly drawings with little additional direction.

Creates 3D designs of low complexity components independently while higher complexity component design direction is provided by engineers.

Independently identifies product structure needs and generates bills of material (BOM) required for designs.

Resolves related mechanical, fabrication or assembly problems. Designs prototypes and/or test equipment.

Participates in and occasionally coordinates the hands-on assembly or prototyping of engineering concepts and/or Alpha build products.

Contributes to the improvement of internal product development (including New Product Development process) and release processes.

Processes engineering change requests (ECR's). Establishes prioritization based on project/manufacturing needs.

May teach others in the best practices of 3D product design, 2D drawing detailing (including GD&T), and BOM creation.

Education & Experience

Associates degree in Design/Drafting and 4-6 years' experience in a related field.

Solid mechanical design experience; able to deliver complete mechanical product specifications with light supervisory technical input.

Working experience with New Product Development processes and key design tasks.

Competencies - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Strong SolidWorks or other similar 3D modeling/CAD software packages.

Strong Oracle Agile or other similar PLM/PDM software package.

>7500 hours experience using Solidworks or other similar 3D CAD packages.

With adequate initial Engineering input, capable of designing the following with minimal support:

complex machined parts

plastic injection molded parts

zinc and aluminum alloy die castings

sheet metal stampings

products/assemblies with consideration for Design for Manufacturability

Intermediate understanding of basic part dimensional inspection methods; able to design go/no-go gaging with some assistance.

Demonstrated knowledge of tolerancing, GD&T, and basic tolerance stack-ups.

Possesses intermediate working knowledge of engineering design principles related to the position. Has applied design principles in practice.
