Overview:

Bergmann, an affiliate of Colliers Engineering & Design, is currently seeking a Discipline Leader to join our Mechanical team in our Lansing, MI office! The Mechanical Discipline Leader will lead and oversee the management of all staff, projects, and project related activities related to mechanical engineering. This position also develops and mentors staff into well-rounded, highly technical, and creative individuals.

Our mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineers are experienced in a wide range of projects, including power generation & distribution, lighting systems, fire alarms, security and access control systems. We design new and renovated systems, as well as energy controls. We offer both new building commissioning and retro-commissioning. Our experts are skilled at reducing energy usage while creating comfortable interior environments. Our professional engineers evaluate how the design impacts both short-term capital costs and long-term operational costs. Our team can also conduct constructability reviews to lower project costs and shorten the time to completion.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and learning sessions to staff in discipline area of expertise and/or identify training programs designed to address the technical development needs to staff
  • Establish and maintain design and production standards and procedures related to discipline
  • Develop and maintain programs to ensure that the staff is up to date with discipline knowledge and practices
  • Prepare proposals, including scope, assumptions, hours, fees, and exclusions
  • Track adherence to budget and provide reports to management as needed (percent complete, etc.)
  • Attends client meetings
  • Plan, organize, supervise, and contribute to the update of and/or creation of Standards of Practice for the discipline, including discipline practices and guidelines, design methodologies, standard specifications, and design standards and details
  • Provide quality checks and review for discipline and act as quality coordinator for projects as assigned
  • Complete goal setting, goal reviews, and professional development plans for direct reports
  • Participate in the recruitment process, including identifying potential candidates, the hiring and selection process, and making verbal job offers as approved for discipline staff
  • Participate in and encourage staff participation in technical societies and associations
  • Alert firm of emerging trends and issues potentially affecting the firms practice as derived from meetings, journals, periodicals, website, review of other design firms work, etc.
  • Fulfill the role of Project Engineer/Architect/etc. as needed
  • Prepare and disseminate marketing materials
  • May fulfill the role of Project Manager including budgeting, billings, contract preparation and negotiation, invoicing, and collections
  • Establish & maintain positive relationships with co-workers, support and build others on the team and across disciplines/offices
  • Be responsive to others and share information to improve efficiency and help others achieve goals; listen and engage in productive and critical debate
  • Suggest new ideas and processes; stay informed of developments in practice areas; view obstacles as opportunities
  • Get to know clients and potential clients and make connections between others at Bergmann Associates and clients, understand the clients needs, short- and long-term strategies continually working towards becoming a trusted advisor
  • Proactively keep clients informed, suggesting next steps, ascertaining answers and solutions as needed and demonstrating integrity in all communications
  • Supports business development and growth within the region.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline from an accredited university is required
  • 10 years or more of experience in engineering, architecture, or related discipline
  • Professional licensure, registration, or certification in related discipline preferred
  • Significant demonstrated experience and knowledge in all phases of discipline including technology, drafting, design and planning
  • Proficient in use and understanding of the appropriate CAD and/or applicable design software
  • Demonstrated skill in proposal writing, and client presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, and work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated success in business development desired
Working Conditions/Environment:
  • Potential travel may be up to 20%, including overnight travel to client sites and office locations within the United States and Canada
