NOTE: Must use MM/DD/YYYY date format for experience on resume.AFRL/RI is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to work in the Civil Engineering Branch of the Site Operations Division. This is a full-time on-site role as a mechanical engineer/program manager located in Rome, NY. Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- This position is responsible for planning and design work for substantial multi-phase new construction, renovations, and improvement projects for real property facilities including but not limited to multi-story office buildings, industrial areas, and information technology laboratories, utilizing a professional knowledge of mechanical engineering.
- Preparing, developing and reviewing design calculations, cost estimates, schedules, underlying analysis, technical drawings, and specifications related to a wide variety of projects and mechanical systems, to include water and sewage (plumbing); heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); fire suppression; Industrial Internet & HVAC Control Systems (IICS) other systems of major size and complexity.
- Serves as a technical consultant and design project engineer on all design aspects of projects and may serve as technical expert in support of contract negotiation or contract administration.
- Contributes to the development of graphic presentations, construction documents, engineering studies, cost estimates, Gantt charts and strategies to communicate with stakeholders.
- Lead operations section personnel in trouble shooting day-to-day mechanical system operations and problems.
- Applying standard mechanical engineering theory and practices to create engineering solutions without technical instruction or guidance and identifies limits of the problems involved.

- A bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
- Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade DR-1/GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes experience in areas of Materials, chemistry and biological sciences and related disciplines.
Desired Qualifications
- An ideal candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of mechanical system design experience. Examples of specialized experience includes mechanical engineering duties; ability to modify standard practices and adapt equipment or techniques to solve a variety of problems; ability to adapt precedents or make significant departures from previous approaches to similar projects in order to provide for the specialized requirements of some projects; and ability to apply the standard practices of related engineering disciplines and architecture as they relate to engineering design.
- Professional Engineer License preferred, but not required.
- Proficiency in CAD/BIM software, load calculations and energy efficiency standards.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Working knowledge of International Building Code is desired.
- The ability to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
