Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design parts for higher volume fabrication processes such as progressive metal stamping and CNC machining from prototype, to pilot and full production to achieve improvements in performance, manufacturability and serviceability.
  • Prepare part and assembly models, fabrication and assembly drawings to ASME Y14.5 standards, proficiency with GD&T and BoM s for prototyping and manufacturing.

Responsible for production dies and process planning for new projects working with stamping engineering, materials, production teams and internal/external die vendors to deliver a final product to cost, time & quality targets.

Modeling, creating fabrication and assembly drawings, bill of materials.

  • Manage the completion of projects within an accepted schedule and budget.
  • Mechanical analysis including Dimensional Tolerance Analysis, and basic FEA for stress to optimizing performance.
  • Recognize and propose design changes to improve manufacturability.
  • Assess automation blank loading and transfer arms to ensure press speed and end of arm cups not damaging panels.

Directs tool changes to tune dies per dimensional quality engineer to ensure dies are capable and repeat.

Ensure dies meet production process intent for cost, quality & repeatability.

Performs vendor die design reviews ensuring die robustness and performance targets are met.

Ensure production readiness of dies, scrap shed, SPM, & no burrs/slivers.

  • Work with manufacturing operations and quality control teams to troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise.
  • Provide mentorship to junior-level employees as appropriate.

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Minimum 5 -10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment is require.
  • Understanding of stamping processes & die design is required.
  • High-level proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD programs and MS-Office Suite. Die simulation software experience is a plus.
  • 7+ Years of simulation / die design experience & die build / tryout
  • 2+ Years of simulation / die design experience preferred in class A steel and stainless-steel parts.
  • Experience with multiple fabrication equipment, complex metal stamping tooling (progressive, transfer & manual dies), die change systems, and associated processes including automated transfer presses
  • Excellent knowledge of metal-forming technologies in general and extensive experience in deep-drawing technology, high-speed progressive dies, die change systems, transfer presses and tooling design in particular.
  • Emphasis on coil-fed stamping presses for metal blanking and forming.
  • Experience in planning design projects from collecting requirements and prototyping through completion and release to manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with other manufacturing methods such as: CNC machining, close tolerance ID and OD grinding, tool steels, etc.
  • Familiarity and practical experience with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Managements systems.
  • Experience in the Automotive industry is a plus.
  • Team player with high degrees of self-motivation and organizational abilities.
  • The ability to complete projects on time and to specification.

Educate and mentor others on tooling requirements, best practices, part design considerations, and cost reduction/avoidance applications.

Previous work experience in a high volume, job shop, fast paced machine shop is desired.

Excellent written and oral communication is required and the ability to execute initiatives to satisfy customer demands and exceed customer expectations is critical.

Must have knowledge and experience with utilizing all types of precision measurement equipment.

Excellent organization and analytical skills along with demonstrating a strong work ethic and superior technical abilities.
