BRIEF SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of patient care as defined by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital nursing philosophy. Under the guidance of the physician, nurse practitioner, physician Assistant, RN, or LPN, the Medical Assistant performs nursing functions in accordance with site-specific policies, procedures and establishes ethics of nursing care. Specifically, the Medical Assistant places patients in exam rooms, takes vital signs, makes notes in the medical chart of the patient, assists the physician, NP or PA as directed and as needed. The Medical Assistant checks medical equipment daily, performs appropriate lab logs and maintains inventories as needed. The Medical Assistant administers EKGs, eye tests and other in-house testing at the physician request and direction as needed. The medical assistant works to facilitate necessary patient documentation/results being available to the provider in the chart during all patient care visits which includes the tracking of all results and consults to completion. The Medical Assistant care coordinator helps to facilitate communication with the patient by supporting their access and use of the patient portal as well as the staff's usage. The Medical Assistant care coordinator also works with the team to help meet and maintain Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home Certification.

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred
  • Experience in a clinical setting preferred
  • Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
