A day in the life of this role: The Medical Assistant assists providers by performing a variety of patient flow, supply and environmental duties to support the health care team in the delivery of high quality patient care. Summary of duties:
  • Review electronic medical record (EMR) prior to patient's scheduled appointment
  • Ensure all lab results, consult reports, and hospital discharge records are available to the provider in the chart and note dates of completion of the most recent primary care screening tests
  • Properly identify patient in accordance with OCHS policy and procedures and escort him/her/their to the exam room; review and record reasons for visit, current medications, and update history as noted in adult health history form/interim history form as well as conduct a thorough patient interview.
  • Provide patient with forms to be completed prior to provider/nurse visit (learning needs assessment, depression screen, consent forms as necessary)
  • Accurately perform and record patient's vital signs, height, weight and oxygen saturation as appropriate
  • Assists in preparing patients for examination; assists patients in undressing, dressing, and getting on and off the examination table
  • Deliver patient care in a manner that is appropriate to the patient's age, physical ability and intellectual development
  • Conduct hearing, vision, breathing and EKG testing; records results in EMR; reports abnormal findings to provider
  • Recognize and report to provider/nurse abnormal vital signs; recognize potential emergency situations, seek assistance and intervene appropriately. Notify the appropriate person in the event of a medical emergency and assist in rendering emergency care as directed as directed by provider or nurse
  • Notify provider of patient's arrival and readiness for his/her examination
  • Assist providers and nurses with patient visits, including but not limited to, diagnostic studies, and treatments, preparing labels, and printing labs
  • Operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, hands instruments to provider
  • Label, collect and prepare lab specimens and handle all specimens using Universal Precautions and in accordance with OCHS's policy and procedures
  • Deliver all lab specimens to lab as indicated
  • Assists providers with patient examinations and procedures, including (but not limited to) minor surgical procedures, GYN exams, diagnostic studies, and treatments
  • Apply and remove dressings under the direction of the provider
  • Perform CLIA waived point of care testing
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and all training seminars (OSHA and others)
  • Clean, wrap and sterilize instruments according to policy and procedure for reprocessing of instrument
  • Assist Charge Nurse with inventory and ordering all medical supplies
  • Keep exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly in accord with infection control and HIPP A standards; monitors rooms for patient safety; documents inspection of rooms twice daily
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Maintain a pleasant, respectful and courteous demeanor at all times with patients and coworkers
  • Exercise care in the operation and use of equipment and perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning
  • Maintain work area in a clean, safe and organized manner
  • Able to walk and stand for long periods of time
  • Able to lift small loads and assist with patient mobility (as needed)
  • Ability to travel between OCHS sites, as needed
  • Adherence to all of OCHS's Policies and Procedures
QualificationsWhat we need from you:
  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Certified Medical Assistant or equivalent (EMT, completion of one year of nursing school program), or completion of a Nursing Assistant program with ability to receive Medical Assistant certification within 6 months of start date.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Phlebotomy training required before medical assistant may draw blood.
