Job Description:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Medical Assistants work closely with medical providers to deliver healthcare to patients in the centers. The range of work involves medical administrative, clinical and operational duties. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs duties that may include: assisting with screenings, weighing and measuring students, assisting with preparation for activities such as physical examinations, providing first aid care to students with minor injuries.2. Performs clerical functions within the front and back office including but is not limited to recording health information, entering data into computer, insurance verification and eligibility, utilization of GRITS system, making appointments, maintenance of the patient chart and following up on missed appointments. 3. Is present in the SBHC during all normal school hours. (In cases where there is an agreement between the school and the SBHC, the school nurse can also fulfill this requirement). 4. When there is no school nurse in the school, operates under specific protocols (shared with school staff and school administration) for the delivery of first aid and emergency care to students. 5. The MA also performs duties according to established policies within the health center and that are documented by the organization. 6. Be aware of and contribute to planning and delivery of Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) The functions within the back office are generally standard and require:
  • Ability to triage, assess and room patients for the provider
  • Assist the provider in clinical procedures and patient care
  • Perform laboratory and phlebotomy procedures
  • Provide limited patient education during procedures and treatments
  • Provide documentation and clinical administrative functions related to direct patient care.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of Accredited Medical Assistant Program
  • Certification or Registered Medical Assistant current/active
  • Minimum of 1 year outpatient experience
  • The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills and able to quickly adapt and stratify content for a varied age range. The candidate will have the ability to work with both children and adults. This candidate should have a working knowledge of health disparities and underserved community health issues. The successful candidate will include a comprehensive appreciation of cultural awareness and sensitivity within their scope of services. SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager who reports to the Medical Director. The MA may be a part of the Super User Team for Electronic Health Record (EHR). AREAS OF PRACTICE EXCLUDED FROM THE SCOPE OF CARE:
  • All aspects of antenatal/obstetric care
  • Reproductive Health on school campus/property
  • All care for which the practitioner is not trained, credential or comfortable providing
  • HEALTH AND SAFETY/RISK MANAGEMENT:
  • The MEDICAL ASSISTANT must comply at all times with the Practice's Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures and reporting incidents using the organizations' Incident Reporting System.
  • The MEDICAL ASSISTANT will comply with the Health Information Protection and Accountability Act of 1996 and the HHS issued Privacy Rule.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • The MEDICAL ASSISTANT is required to travel independently between practice sites (where applicable), and to attend meetings hosted by other agencies periodically.
