Overview:

Assists the physician and office staff with selected duties to include clerical processing, patient preparation, scheduling, lab, x-ray and medical records. As directed, performs patient care activities consistent with the established standards of clinical practice. The incumbent in this position shall carry out his or her responsibilities and integrate into his or her work ethic the Mercy Philosophy of caring for the sick and suffering, respect for human life and the dignity of each person, applying Christian values to all crucial human issues in the area over which he or she has responsibility. In communicating with patients, families, visitors and employees, a caring, friendly, personal and professional approach is expected. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications:

  • Minimum Required Qualifications
    • Education: High School diploma or GED.
    • Experience:Must have 2 years work experience as a Medical Assistant. Experience credit may be given for relevant healthcare experience with approved exception.
    • Certification/Registration:Medical Assistant certification from one of the Mercy approved certifying bodies. Obtain CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
      • Other Skills and Knowledge:Successful completion of Clinic Academy or completed within 30 days if they are new to the Medical Assistant role. Successful completion of the Clinic Competency Checklist annually. Exhibit critical thinking skills, initiative and have knowledge of chronic diseases. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Must be able to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and policies. Must be able to communicate clearly and establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public. Must be able to operate multi-line phone, fax and computer.
    • Performs all responsibilities of Medical Assistant IConsistently performs the following additional responsibilities:- In-room patient checkout, including front end collections processes.- Performs phlebotomy/lab procedures- Completes instrument preparation for providers- Completes patient pre-certifications and prior authorizations- Assists providers with completion of patient paperwork- Performs education with the patient and family - Completes advanced in-basket requests and messages- Administers injections - Communicates with patients their test and lab results, handles patient triage- Observes universal precautions consistently, and Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate- Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance- Performs other duties as directed
