Overview:

Location: Fort Sam Houston - Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), San Antonio, TX

Schedule: Looking for someone that is flexible that is open to days, evenings, over night, and weekends. Medical Laboratory Technicians services shall be required Sunday through Saturday, to include federal and training holidays, during the hours of 0000 to 2359 hours. Due to the irregular workload requirements throughout Pathology, the section supervisors will determine actual shift schedules. Shifts of 8 or 12 hours or portions thereof to meet the average 40-hour work week will be scheduled between 0000 2359 hours

Pay: Starting at $27/hr + Health & Wellness $4.22/hr worked (in lieu of benefits)

Responsibilities:
  • Performing qualitative and quantitative testing in a high complexity clinical laboratory and moderate complexity for chemistry section using various analyzers and/or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids using established procedures.
  • Organizing work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens.
  • Arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surface clean and orderly in accordance to local protocol.
  • Maintaining quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
  • Processing biological fluids (blood, urine, and other body fluids) in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintaining positive identification of final reports and specimen from time of receipt until final released report.
  • Recognizing and reacting to instrument malfunctions by troubleshooting and resolving minor problems, performing routine and periodic maintenance of all equipment as scheduled, and performing routine Quality Control (QC) to ensure all QC results fall within established control limits, as well as documents all corrective action.
  • Entering patient results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and recording new lots of reagents and runs appropriate quality control prior to releasing patient results. Maintaining occupational proficiency in the use of the Composite Health Care System (CHCS) and other LIS systems (i.e. HCLL, Essentris, Lifetime) as required in performing daily tasks.
  • Contributing to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Performing or assisting with College of American Pathologists (CAP) CAP surveys as directed.
Qualifications:
  • Degree: Associate's degree or higher.
  • Education: Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
  • Certification: Certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT as specified in the TO.
  • Experience: One year of experience as specified in the TO.
