We are a comprehensive medical laboratory serving the Trinity Health hospital system and toxicology which includes clinical and forensic discipline as part of the operation. Clinical toxicology encompasses the therapeutic drug monitoring, pain management and volatile alcohols testing while the workplace drug and volatile alcohol testing are the forensic toxicology.REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSUREEducation: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or university in Life Sciences or Medical Technology.- May consider a bachelor's degree in science with a combination of relevant work experience in a laboratory setting. Proof of educational transcripts must be submitted at time of application.Experience: Prior experience desired, but not required. Will train. Understanding the principles of basic chemistry and techniques is essential.Certification/Licensure: Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - ASCP, or NCLS certification preferred.This position may also be listed as: Medical Lab Scientist, Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist Applicants for this position must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor an employment visa for this position.The job duties include but are not limited to instrument operation, specimen preparation for LC/MSMS and GC/MS analysis, and result reporting. Basic knowledge and some experience in wet chemistry techniques are important.REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES1. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with physicians, nursing unit personnel, other clients, and laboratory and other Health Center personnel while reporting and explaining rest results requesting or providing information. 2. Analytical skills necessary to interpret and analyze test results of complex or unusual procedures and determine appropriate course of action for abnormal and atypical results. 3. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail while performing job responsibilities. 4. Follows established procedures and policies to perform all tests, pertinent to the section to which assigned. 2. Records and/or enters laboratory computer results of tests performed and advises supervisor spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release of results for reporting. 3. Reports results of tests ordered stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner and according to established policies and procedures. 4. Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention of supervisor or pathologist to unusual fluctuations. 5. Performs required quality control and equipment maintenance and calibrates and operates laboratory equipment used in performance of the tests pertinent to the section) to which assigned. 6. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations, in accordance with department policy on procedure. 7. Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing. 8. Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel with regard to results and for clarification of requests and other routine problems which may arise. 9. Actively participates in department and section meetings, continuing education, in-service and quality assurance program.10. Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, developmental and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies. 11. Assists in training of technologists, technicians, lab assistants, clerical staff and others.12. Assumes Tech- in- Charge duties, as assigned.13. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. 14. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. 15. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. 16.
