Job Description:
Rivers Health is seeking a full-time Medical Laboratory Tech. LIS Billing Coordinator to perform the essential functions below:
  • Responsible for reviewing bulletins and monitoring publications for coding and billing updates.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Medicare and commercial insurance coverage guidelines and medical necessity justification for laboratory procedures.
  • Proactively monitor specific tests known to create billing problems.
  • Assist with educating referring physicians and staff to ensure accounts are coded and billed correctly.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate charge master for laboratory procedures.
  • Reviews edits and controllable write-offs and examines existing processes and problems and continuously looks for ways to improve existing processes.
  • Attend Revenue Compliance and Controllable Write-off meetings with management.
  • Reviews daily exception reports and makes corrections.
  • Monitors temporary Laboratory Specimen accounts.
  • Corrects and codes all miscellaneous testing charges for reference labs as well as auditing bills in comparison to incoming reference lab charges.
  • Assists in regular review of the laboratory charge master.
  • Oversees and coordinates all Laboratory Information System related activity in the different Laboratory sections including general lab, Microbiology, Blood Bank and Pathology or any other Laboratory system that is implemented.
  • Coordinates activity with Hospital Information System applications, working with the Laboratory Information System Analyst in the IT department.
  • Assures the Laboratory Information System operates accurately and efficiently with minimal errors, problems, or disruption of services.
  • Addresses hardware issues, such as printers, terminals, keyboards to assure staff have working equipment. Assures quick repair or replacement of dysfunctional hardware.
  • Works with the Laboratory Information System Analyst to maintain pricing database, including in-house and reference lab testing. Review new pricing lists for send-out labs and blood suppliers and updates CPT codes and pricing in a timely manner.
  • Works with the Laboratory Information System Analyst to assure all manual charges are input in a timely manner.
  • Works with the Laboratory Information System Analyst in resolving billing edits and discrepancies. Assures all rejected charges are resolved.
  • Keeps Laboratory management aware of system problems and recommends resolution with prompt action taken if so directed.
  • Verifies accuracy of the system by performing scheduled audits of each required function or area.
  • Assures instrument interfaces are performing accurately and efficiently.
  • Assures interface between Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information System performs accurately and efficiently requiring minimal downtime.
  • Reviews hospital system and lab system reports to assure all tests are resulted, reported, charged and/or cancelled/credited as appropriate.
  • Keeps database updated as the needs of the laboratory change.
  • Works with department supervisors and/or super users to build new and change existing tests in the database, including, but not limited to: normal ranges, units of measure, label information, pricing, performing department/reference laboratory, charting, and interfacing to other systems.
  • Maintains and updates database for reference laboratory testing and interface functions.
  • Installs software updates and works with Laboratory Information System Analyst and Department Supervisors in validating expected documentation in a timely manner.
  • Serves as the primary contact in the lab for all computer-related matters.
  • Informs the laboratory management of new or available products and training for Laboratory Information System related activities.
  • Helps Laboratory Information System Analyst to maintain Laboratory Information System operating manuals, policies, tests requests/ reports to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains a downtime log, recording all downtime issues for Laboratory Information System.
  • Oversees training of lab personnel on the Laboratory Information System. Evaluates and ensures competency of personnel as related to the laboratory computer system.
  • Develops, conducts and/or coordinates Laboratory Information System training programs for all employees.
  • Prepares training and educational materials. Provides continuing education as needed.
  • Assures daily operation reports which satisfy the needs of the Department Supervisors, Pathologists and Laboratory Management are available and timely.
  • Assures statistics are accurate and timely for required reports.
  • Assures policy and procedure manuals are completed, updated, and reviewed as necessary.
  • Works with Laboratory Information System Analyst and Laboratory Management to submit service requests to Laboratory Information System vendor for software changes and improvements. Acts as a liaison between the end user and the vendors.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot computer issues including interface, peripherals, database files and tables. Identifies and assists the hospital IT department to resolve problems relating to any computer issues for all Laboratory Information System customers.
  • Provides on-going 24/7 emergency application support for lab staff via cell phone.
  • Serves as a liaison between the laboratory and all other hospital departments.
  • Tests, verifies and records results of software changes and system enhancements according to established protocols.
  • Works with the Laboratory Information System Analyst to maintain Laboratory Information System security access, granting the appropriate security to new and existing employees. Maintains proper documentation of compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Manages and builds reports within the Laboratory Information System to export to Excel laboratory testing, results, test codes, etc.
  • Works with department supervisors to write reports needed for physicians and residents for medical studies and cases.
  • Manage the Laboratory Information System by providing troubleshooting, equipment and assisting the nursing staff.
  • Maintain the hardware for Laboratory Information System, working with Laboratory Information System vendor for repairs, software updates and testing, notifying Laboratory Manager of any changes for approval.
  • Works with other departments in the hospital, such as Employee Health for laboratory test codes and results to be interfaced with other systems within the hospital. Notify these areas of new test codes or changes and help resolve issues.
  • Works with the IT department when faxes are incorrectly sent, troubleshoots, resolves and follows up with the errors.
  • Works with IT in scheduling hardware and software updates for the laboratory computers, scheduling with each department supervisor and notifying the departments and nursing units if affected.
  • Help maintain the lab computers when updates have occurred and errors are given, working with IT department and Laboratory Information System vendor.
  • Helps assist lab assistants with orders not crossing physician phone numbers, faxes, and printers.
  • Helps with entering new physicians and residents in the Laboratory Information System and working with IT department in maintaining current information for physicians promptly.
  • Work with and assist the Help Desk in maintaining the laboratory label printers. Communicating parts that need ordered and maintaining workflow to minimize downtime of printers.
  • Assists physician offices when laboratory test orders or results are not crossing. Provide troubleshooting and work with IT department to resolve.
  • Helps troubleshoot analyzers, maintain middleware, and performs linearities and quality control on new Point of Care instruments.
  • Serves on hospital committees as needed or requested.
  • Reports on the job as scheduled.
  • Follows all standard safety precautions.
  • Annually completes required competency assessments.
  • Utilize appropriate measures to promote and maintain patient safety.
  • Makes decisions which include using the age of the patients treated when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of operation to include but not limited to the required unit specific equipment/procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of on-going unit specific performance improvement activities.
  • Assists with Community Wellness activities.
  • Manages and compiles evidence of compliance for Laboratory Information Systems from College of American Pathologist Laboratory General regulatory standards
  • Follows safety and infection control policies of the laboratory and all other hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates excellence in customer service skills.

  • Collect specimens from patients in a manner that supports the guest relations policy of the hospital.
  • Conducts all tests with departmental policy and procedures.
  • Observe and note test results, documenting and retesting any procedures that fall out of acceptable range.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are available to complete anticipated volume of test during course of assignment in area.
  • Follows safety and infection control policies of the laboratory and all other hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Conduct's instrument preventive maintenance as required by Departmental policies and procedures on all equipment, as directed by departmental section head.
  • Performs and documents all quality control as a routine part of general testing.
  • Performs proficiency testing as designed by section head in assigned area.
  • EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:Associate degree and/or Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or related field pluseligibility for ASCP and WV License. WORK EXPERIENCE:Two to Five years coding experience preferred. Three years or greater of Laboratory experience preferred. Proficiency and experience in Laboratory computer systems and database management preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:Must be able to perform vein and/or (capillary) punctures. Must be able to read and understand laboratory instruction manuals. Must demonstrate the ability to identify and address the special needs of the ages of patients including neonates, adolescents, pediatrics, and geriatrics and can effectively communicate with the patient.
