MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST – MICROBIOLOGY

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Orchard Laboratories is looking to expand their microbiology department.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related or scientific field is required; a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology is preferred.

Experience: Three years of experience in laboratory testing required.

LICENSE:

Certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists, preferred.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Validation and Implementation may include but not limited to:

  • Internal and external proficiency testing
  • Maintenance and calibration records
  • Personnel training and competency assessments
  • Parallel testing of duplicate instruments
  • Correlation with clinical findings
  • Analytical validation – Establishing performance parameters for a laboratory developed test or a modification of a cleared test.
  • Clinical validation – Demonstrating that the test system performs according to specification.
  • Comparison study – Comparison of results between analyzed method and “reference” method.

Applies advanced level of knowledge, training, and clinical judgment to:

  • Standardize, calibrate, perform preventative maintenance, and perform in-depth troubleshooting on laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Evaluate instrument performance and quality control results to determine the accuracy and reliability of all analytical data before it is released
  • Develop and follow all quality control and quality assurance procedures for the microbiology section.
  • Release quality patient test results
  • Identify, characterize, and perform antimicrobial susceptibility on atypical/unusual bacterial isolates submitted.
  • Correlate results with other laboratory data and/or disease states

Applies knowledge of infection control practices, use of laboratory tests and requirements of COLA, CLIA, CLSI and OSHA guidelines and regulations are required.

Participate in proficiency testing, perform preventive maintenance and documentation, maintain records of reagent and media production, perform, document and file quality control results, prepare non-conforming event reports, and participate in continuing education activities.

Maintains the laboratory and procedures in inspection ready condition.

May perform other related duties as assigned or requested, including inventory control, reagent preparation, special projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Effort:

· Requires considerable walking and standing.

· Occasional light lifting to store supplies.

· Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform job functions.

Work Environment:

· Works in a clinical laboratory and works with hazardous reagents and infectious materials.
