Job Summary
To report to the Practice Manager, the purpose of this job is to handle time-consuming clerical responsibilities for physicians during office based patient encounters. Scribes accompany a physician and directly observe patient encounters. They accurately document the events and decision-making in a manner that results in appropriate medical charting. Scribes also complete clerical activities necessary to assist with processing of physician orders for tests and medications. The intent of this position is to perform time-consuming clerical duties that otherwise would be assigned to a physician enabling the physician to spend more time with individual patients and increase the overall flow of patients in the practice.
Accountabilities
- Accompany physician into the patient examination room in order to transcribe into EPIC (EMR) patient's history, physical exam findings, and document accurately the physician's encounter with the patient and others present.
- Enter all proper diagnoses and symptoms as well as follow up instructions and prescription refills needed until next office visit as dictated and signed by the physician.
- Enter patient orders as dictated and signed by the physician including laboratory tests, radiology tests, and hospital procedures.
- Prepare plans for follow-up care, as directed by the physician.
- Provide advanced support to physicians, including documenting phone calls in EPIC, scanning outside medical records into EPIC, completing and following up on internal and external referrals, schedule follow up appointments while in outlying clinics.
- Travel as needed with Physician to outlying clinics: Newberry, Fairfield, Chester, Manning and Kingstree.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.
- No previous experience is required.
- 6 months experience as a Medical Scribe is preferred.
Required License, Registry, or Certification
- Medical scribe certification is preferred.
Other Skills/Knowledge
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology and/or ICD 9 & 10 coding preferred.
- Ability to move about and follow a physician for extended periods of time. Ability to read, write, comprehend through listening, and speak fluent English using proper grammar. Ability to operate a computer and/or laptop through proficient typing, clicking and viewing a monitor/laptop for extended periods is required.
