Job Description:

Our client is a leading not-for-profit organization that spearheads breakthrough treatments for infectious diseases by uniting diverse sectors and igniting innovation. They have retained us to assist in their search for a Medicinal Chemistry Leader.

Major tasks and responsibilities include:

  • The Medicinal Chemistry Leader will be responsible for helping to implement the research and pre-clinical development strategy of the company. As a key member of the company's Research and Development (R&D) team, the Medicinal Chemistry Leader will:
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Chemistry and the Chief Scientific Officer to oversee medicinal chemistry efforts. This role will endorse, apply, and incorporate cutting-edge technology in chemistry, biology, and molecular biology to achieve timely and high-quality results.
  • Provide scientific and technical leadership in medicinal chemistry, process development, and GMP synthesis, overseeing key aspects of drug research and development from early discovery to advanced stages, including regulatory submissions.
  • Lead or co-lead a portion of the company's preclinical portfolio.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including biologists, toxicologists, and clinicians, to identify and evaluate potential projects, compounds, and candidates for drug development.
  • Manage collaborations with academic researchers globally to maximize information flow and optimize collaboration outcomes.
  • Plan and manage the company's collaboration with various CROs and CDMOs to generate high-quality results efficiently and on schedule.
  • Represent the company externally in scientific, financial, and business development communities, as well as in meetings with regulatory bodies, to communicate the company's promising efforts and accomplishments.
  • Report progress toward research milestones to the Head of Research, the R&D team, the Scientific Advisory Committee, and company management.
  • Ensure proper patenting and publication practices to protect intellectual property generated through the projects.
  • Keep up to date with advancements in tuberculosis drug research and development within both industry and academic settings.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable GxP regulations in performing job functions, including attending annual GxP or other applicable regulatory training provided by the company.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in chemistry from a well-respected academic institution is required.
  • Extensive experience in the field of medicinal chemistry within a pharmaceutical/biotechnology company.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in medicinal chemistry, preferably in the infectious disease research area, with a thorough understanding of the requirements and processes needed to take a potential drug from discovery through full development.
  • A successful track record in drug discovery research and in delivering drug candidates for clinical development, preferably in the pulmonary or infectious disease area.
  • A broad-based knowledge in medicinal chemistry and process development, as well as experience in the preclinical development of multiple drug candidates, is required.
  • Must have experience in drug discovery research and preclinical development with an understanding of the complex interface between research and clinical development.
  • Proven organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner with the highest levels of research management in small and larger pharmaceutical companies.
  • Ability to present effectively in global settings with a keen interest and capacity to develop expertise in specialized fields.
  • A diplomatic personality capable of representing the company to international regulators and partners.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, along with interpersonal skills that foster effective working relationships.
  • A sense of purpose and dedication to the company's drug development objectives and its not-for-profit mission.
