Click here for more about Student Affairs.Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in an appropriately accredited mental health training program (social work, mental health counseling, psychology, etc.). Appropriate mental health licensure and ability to practice in NYS (e.g. LMHC, LCSW, etc.).Two (2) years of full-time experience in a mental health setting or other relevant clinical experience. Experience in counseling, crisis assessment, intervention, and management. Experience in community engagement (building partnerships and collaborative decision-making to achieve health outcomes).Preferred Qualifications:Experience in direct counseling and assessment in a university setting. Experience using personal computers and basic software packages. Experience in facilitating discussion groups and workshops. Experience providing outreach and supportive programming related to mental health.Brief Description of Duties:This is an inaugural position for a mental health specialist within campus residences reporting to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The incumbent will live on campus among our resident students to provide workshops, groups, outreach, referral, and clinical services. The incumbent will provide training and consultation to campus residence staff. The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and will need to exercise strong organizational and time-management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is flexibility and adeptness to work independently, proactively reaching out and collaborating with campus residence staffto integrate mental health education and services on an ongoing basis. Residential Student Responsibilities: Facilitate mental health support groups on various topics within the residence halls. Provide confidential solution-focused single-session intervention on an as-needed basis. Facilitate transitions to campus resources such as counseling telehealth, after-hours crisis resources,and other needs, as appropriate. Train campus residence staff to use evidence-based crisis assessment tools for evaluating students. When necessary, guide them in facilitating mental health-related stabilization or hospitalization through community resources. Facilitate referrals to other on and off-campus resources when appropriate. Provide skill-based psychoeducation workshops that address challenges that are pertinent to students living away from family and struggling with various ongoing social or mental health challenges. Support students who are transitioning back to the residence halls after being separated from the university due to various mental health-related needs. Provide individual counseling either in the satellite location or at CAPS main location as and when needed. Consultation, Outreach, and Training: Provide ongoing consultation to live-on professional staff in Campus Residences and undergraduate and graduate Resident Assistants (RAs) on student mental health issues that are emerging. Attend Resident Assistant monthly area staff meetings. Provide ongoing training to prepare RAs and pro-staff to navigate MH issues Provide support spaces for RAs who are navigating difficult situations with their residents Serve as a liaison between Campus residence and CAPS/CPO/CARE/SST and SASC Provide outreach, education and awareness-raising programming in conjunction with CPO for residence hall students. Internship Programs to Support Residential Students: Serves as MSWgraduate Intern clinical supervisor for 6 graduate-level interns with oversight of their learning plan and development of professional competencies in their roles to provide peer-to-peer mental health, well-being support and screening programs in the residence hall. Oversight and training of other credit-bearing undergraduate interns in collaboration with the CPO. Develop and implement a peer-to-peer residence hall support program utilizing graduate and undergraduate interns. Organize mental health and wellness activities for resident students in collaboration withinterns and RAs. Professional Development and Committee Involvement: Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.). Other duties are assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Hours outside the normal work schedule may be required at times. Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.
