Administrative - Central Office - Other Job Number 230####### Start Date Open Date 09/09/2024 Closing Date Mentor for Vice Principal 2023-24OVERVIEW The philosophy of the Syracuse City School District Mentor Teacher Internship Program (MTIP) is that induction is a crucial transition between teacher preparation and continuing professional development. Mentoring is the first step in the Teacher Career Development Continuum. The Mentor Teacher Internship Program is designed to facilitate the transition of the beginning teacher from success in preparation programs to effective practice in new contexts of the classroom and the Syracuse City School District. A mentored experience is one of New York State's requirements that new teachers must meet in order to qualify for permanent certification. The MTIP program in SCSD ensures that teachers who are not supported by a PAR consultant are able to get their mentored experience. It also serves to continue support of second year teachers. JOB DESCRIPTION The Mentor role is a role available to administrators who have demonstrated effectiveness in the Syracuse City School District. The role of the Mentor is to engage, inspire, assist, encourage, and advance professional learning of a beginning administrator and to model professional conduct. The Mentor is a tenured administrator that serves as a non-evaluative guide, support person, model, counselor, advocate, friend, and colleague who works to initiate the new administrator into profession in a professional and supportive manner. They will serve as a model of professional conduct with a strong commitment to collaboration and demonstrate an understanding of content, pedagogy, human development, and best practices. The Mentor will guide the novice leader toward mastering elements of effective leadership, by utilizing the leadership rubric. The selection of Mentors will be guided by high standards of knowledge, expertise, and evidence of reflective practice. REPORTS TO: Deputy Superintendent and Deputy Chief of School Leadership DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Mentor will be expected to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  • Participate in required professional development for all mentors
  • Work individually with up to 2 new administrators
  • When possible, observe new administrators to help problem-solve and provide support. This would be non-evaluative, only formative, and serve to support the growth and development of the administrator.
  • Foundation of supports will be derived from the six big concepts identified in the VPs Lead & Learn Growth and Effectiveness System beginning of year conference.
  • Mentors will support goals established by VP and their Building Principal.
  • Mentors will assist VP in completing a YEAR 1 Strategic Planning for School Success Roadmap.
  • Mentors will be trained in the VP/AI Growth and Effectiveness System.
  • Mentors will maintain a running record of dates/times of meeting with mentee and focus area for each session based on the goals established for the year.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • preferably tenured current, or recently retired SCSD administrator
  • Receipt of Highly Effective or Effective ratings for two consecutive years
  • Holds current professional or permanent New York State teacher Building Leader Cerification
SALARY/SALARY RANGE: Stipend of $3,500 (prorated) in addition to regular Unit 2 salary. Job Description View Attachment
