The Merchant Logistics Lead is responsible for acting as a key point of contact for carriers and the supply chain to optimize flow upstream for Academy. By leveraging Transportation Management Systems and 3rd parties, this role will lead process improvements by analyzing the best approach to flow product in our network, communicating with carriers, DC personnel, and internal Academy Sports + Outdoors team members while supporting service level agreements and meeting key performance indicators. This role requires innovative thinking and leadership to drive efficiencies in international and domestic networks.

Job Description:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Distribution or Logistics or equivalent years of experience preferred. High School Diploma or GED required.

Work Experiences:

  • 5+ years of logistics, inventory management, and transportation experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in using Transportation Management Systems.
  • Customer Service and Distribution Center experience preferred.

  • Navigates and prioritizes complex requests to address business demands and needs.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbal.
  • Able to independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes.

  • Intermediate working knowledge of purchase order, logistics, transportation inventory flow, and management.
  • Very strong attention to detail for data entry.
  • Strong presentation skills throughout all levels in a corporation.
  • Strategic thinking cross-functionally.
  • Financial acumen in PNL, forecasting models.
  • Intermediate MS Excel and Word skills, Basic MS Access skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Accumulate, review, and analyze data from multiple systems and sources to improve freight flow and reduce costs (i.e. prepaid versus collect, direct to store, PDQs, upstream cross-dock opportunities).
  • Develop and maintain cross-functional reports to reduce costs (i.e. detention/layover costs).
  • Work across the organization to forecast freight for carrier management (securing capacity), labor allocation, and equipment utilization.
  • Report KPIs including carrier scorecards stipulated within the contracts and used to manage carrier performance and contract negotiations.
  • Create weekly forecasts for leadership based on established volume and pricing metrics.
  • Assist with budget preparation and administration using baselining, forecasts, KPIs, and scorecarding.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; recommend and implement resulting policies and procedures.
  • Create weekly recaps on trends, root causes, and status updates with root cause analysis to drive out delays and build repeatable business processes.
  • Act as a Transportation Management Systems (TMS) Super User to recommend design and configuration enhancements to improve functionality and optimize performance in TMS and other logistics systems.
  • Conduct data mining and data analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and provide actionable summaries of key findings on a consistent and proactive basis. Define, measure, and communicate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Develop best practices for TMS usage to meet business needs.
  • Assist with TMS and other logistics systems solution design and requirements gathering.
  • Perform TMS and other logistics systems solution testing, configurations, and user training to meet business requirements.
  • Document business requirements, solution configuration, script testing, and user guides.
  • Create future business process designs that meet business needs.
  • Provide functional user admin support and identify system and process risks and opportunities.
  • Provide ad hoc financial reporting.
  • Identify and formalize leading and lagging indicators, aligning strategic goals with objectives, targets, and metrics.
  • Use metrics for critical events in order management flow (e.g., scheduling response cycle time, actual schedule vs. buyer's requested ship date and published lead time, on-time shipping/on-time delivery performance).
  • Analyze vendor performance through On Time and In Full programs.
  • Analyze Academy vendors through prepaid or collect.
  • Financial analysis against budgetary requirements.
  • Understand product flow of Academy footprint throughout the supply chain.
  • Responsibilities may change; team members may be required to perform other tasks as assigned.

Physical Requirements & Attendance:

  • Requires on-call after hours, Monday through Friday, including weekends and some holidays.
  • Acceptable level of hearing and vision to perform job duties.
  • Adhere to company work hours, policies, procedures, and rules governing professional staff behavior.
