Job Description
* Oversight and ownership of the metallurgical process at AAM's Three Rivers Manufacturing Facility (TRMF). The metallurgist reviews process parameters and inputs, adjusting as necessary to produce parts which conform to customer requirements. Plant processes which require oversight include:
* Atmosphere carburizing
* Induction Hardening
* Tempering
* Manganese Phosphate
* Washers
* Non-destructive testing (including MPI, Eddy Current, UT, and FPI)
* In support of plant operations, product engineering requests, or quality concerns, the metallurgist will perform analysis as assigned using the following techniques:
* Microstructure
* NDT inspection (MPI, Eddy current, UT, FPI)
* Chemical titrations
* Failure analysis
* Hardness and Micro-hardness testing
* The metallurgist is responsible for writing work instructions, control plans, and assisting with PFMEA creation and maintenance for assigned processes. These processes are typically limited to plant metallurgical processes and procedures internal to the lab governing testing techniques and lab operations. Examples of such documents may include:
* Purchase specifications
* Heat treat procedures
* Washer specifications used to control alkaline mechanical washers in production
* Operator work instructions for heat inspection or manganese phosphate operations
* Participates in all CQI-9 heat treat audits and offer technical assistance if needed.
* Trains support staff such as new technicians or SMTs on the shop production floor.
* Documents results of testing and investigations in technical reports.
* Oversees 2-3 Metallurgy Technicians on assigned shift.
* All other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Education
Required:
* Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering or equivalent professional experience.
* Experience with mechanical drawing, drafting, or print reading.
* Strong background in science fundamentals: Algebra, geometry, chemistry, physics.
* Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
* Technical writing skills (English).
* The ability to work independently without regular supervision or direction.
* The ability to work on-site on any shift, for extended hours, which will vary based on circumstances.
Preferred:
* 3+ years of heat treat experience.
* 2+ years experience in a manufacturing setting.
* Leadership experience in a plant environment.
* Familiarity with NDT techniques (MPI, eddy current).
* Previous heat treat or waste water experience.
