About the Position and Department
The Meter Maintenance Worker may be appointed at either level depending upon qualifications and experience. This position is in the Finance Department and reports directly to the Meter Services Supervisor and performs work installing, reading, removing, repairing, inspecting, and testing potable and recycled water meters. The Meter Maintenance Worker II position includes the additional duties of testing and maintaining backflows/cross connection control devices in addition to water meters. The Finance Department is responsible for Customer Service, Meter Services, Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Payroll and has a staff of approximately 31 employees.

* Processes work requests using applicable computer systems, enters work completed and updates status.
* Installs, reads, removes, replaces, repairs, inspects, and tests potable and recycled water meters.
* Troubleshoots problems with the meter reading systems, changes transponders.
* Enters backflow certification data.
* Monitors, reports, and discontinues water service to any premise where water meter and/or backflow prevention device has been tampered with, removed, or bypassed.
* Reports and documents detection of water ordinance violations.
* Responds to customer calls regarding water meter leaks, pressure problems, and other related concerns.
* Replaces broken meter boxes.
* Flow-tests water meters to determine accuracy to District standards.
* Assists other departments as needed with emergency and non-emergency shutdowns.
* Performs general maintenance, replacement, and repair of water meters and meter boxes to include sandblasting, sanding, and painting.
* Operates a District vehicle as required in performance of assigned job.
* Identifies and recommends opportunities for improvement.
Meter Maintenance Worker II level duties also include:
* Installs, tests, replaces and repairs all District backflow prevention devices and records/enters required information.
* Maintains backflow prevention in compliance with all regulatory and District requirements.
* Spot checks private backflow testers to ensure they test properly.
* Installs, reads, removes, repairs, replaces, inspects, and tests potable and recycled water meters from three quarter (3/4) to ten (10) inch in size.
* Performs general maintenance of water meters and of water meter, meter boxes and backflow devices.

Both levels require a valid California Driver's License and a safe driving record.
The Meter Maintenance Worker II requires a Backflow Prevention Assembly General Tester certification issued by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) or American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA).
Both levels require a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Meter Maintenance Worker I
One (1) year of experience in the installation, diagnosis, testing, repair, removal, and maintenance of mechanical and/or electronic equipment or devices.
Meter Maintenance Worker II
Two (2) years of experience in the installation, diagnosis, testing, repair, removal, and/or maintenance of water meters of three quarter (3/4) to ten (10) inch size. Experience in the installation, repair, removal, and testing of backflow prevention devices is highly desirable.
Both levels will be subject to random drug testing during employment.
This is an hourly, non-exempt position.
