City of Ormond Beach Job Description Meter Reader Summary: Performs outdoor meter reading duties and indoor duties related to reading water consumption registered by underground water meters. Duties are performed with a great degree of independence and under the direction of the Meter Reader Supervisor. This position requires availability to work rotating on-call shifts. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Reads water meters on assigned route and enters readings and other notations. Checks meters for functionality and reports stopped and defective meters to supervisor. Cleans debris from meters and meter boxes. Repairs touch-read and radio-read meters as required. Operates and maintains pick-up truck. Enters work orders on a laptop in the field. Performs a variety of services for water customers such as turning on and off water service, obtaining final water meter readings, and responding to customer inquiries and/or complaints. Verifies account status and posts notices at customer locations relative to delinquent accounts. May interact with customers. Participates in on-call and after-hours duties as assigned. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-outs when necessary. Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts. Meets attendance requirements. Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally. Performs other job-related functions as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent recognized certificate Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Working knowledge of the tools, including automated meter reading equipment, methods, materials and equipment used in the performance of the job. Working knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City. Thorough knowledge of the methods used in municipal utility billing/customer service/cash receipts practices and procedures. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and project a consumer friendly environment. Ability to interact in a positive manner in stressful situations. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability work independently.
